❓What skill did you learn early on that you still use daily?

Apprenticeships are about more than just technical skills. By working at the same time as learning, an apprentice will develop a whole host of professional, personal and life skills along the way.

In this video we put the Skills for Life theme to the test by asking various members of the PPS team who are or have been apprentices; What skill did you learn early on that you still use today?

PPS were proud to donate to the recent Cycle to Lapland Challenge taken on by the Calderdale Neonatal Unit 🚲🎅

This campaign by the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity aimed to raise funds to refurbish the parent rooms on the unit, rooms that had been used by a family from the PPS team during the last year.

Chris Marshall, from the PPS Compressor Spares team, welcomed his daughter a little earlier than expected on the 1st of October 2025. “Marnie was due on the 11th of November, but she surprised us all by arriving six weeks early. She spent 19 days on the unit with my partner Chelsea and the care they received was amazing. We are so grateful for everything the team did for our family. She is now four months old, doing really well and keeping us both on our toes!”

Every year PPS donates money to a local charity or community project at Christmas instead of sending corporate gifts. The team nominate and vote for who they think should receive the donation, the Calderdale Neonatal Unit was a clear winner this year.

Emma Kovaleski, Head of CHFT NHS Charity, said: “We have been completely blown away by the support shown through the Cycle to Lapland Challenge, which helped us to surpass our fundraising target. Every pound raised will make a real difference, allowing us to refurbish the three parent rooms on the Neonatal Unit and make them more comfortable for families when they need it most. We’re incredibly thankful to PPS for their generosity and for helping us support parents and babies during such an important time.”

Fact check: An Atlas Copco VSD is not suitable if a different brand VSD is already installed 🤔

Spoiler alert: False ❌

There is no technical reason why an Atlas Copco VSD compressor can’t be added to a setup that already includes compressors from another brand – VSD or not. With proper central control, mixed-brand systems can run efficiently and reliably.

In fact, mixed-brand compressor setups are not unusual. Many facilities have compressors from different manufacturers installed over time as needs change or budgets evolve. What matters most is not the brand match, but how well each machine is maintained, sized, and controlled.

Central controllers make integration seamless. Potential issues only arise when multiple compressors are not run as a coordinated system. Atlas Copco’s Equalizer central control system can manage compressors from many other manufacturers. It ensures that every compressor in your system – regardless of brand – runs in sync, responds to demand intelligently, and contributes to overall efficiency.

Fact Check: Fixed-speed compressors are better for stable air demand 🤔

Spoiler alert: Not necessarily. Even when airflow is steady, advanced Variable Speed Drive (VSD) compressors often outperform fixed-speed models in energy efficiency.

Why?

✅ Avoid wasteful unload and blow-off cycles
✅ Run intelligently across all load conditions

The truth is, only about 8% of compressed air systems operate with truly stable airflow. And even then, fixed-speed compressors waste energy through cycling and venting.

Christmas volunteering 🎅

This week we have had two teams out in our community using a volunteering day.

Some of our Sheffield team helped Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

While team members from our Brighouse branch were packing Christmas food hampers for Focus4Hope

Both charities do vital work in our community, and our volunteering policy means we can help to support them 💙
