β οΈ 6 signs your consumer unit might need replacing
Your fuse board is one of the most important safety components in your home β and many older ones no longer meet current standards. Here's what to look out for:
β’ Rewireable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers
β’ No RCD protection (look for switches marked 'RCD' or 'RCCB')
β’ A plastic enclosure β modern regs require metal for fire safety
β’ Circuits that trip frequently or won't hold
β’ Burning smells, buzzing sounds, or heat marks around the board
β’ Running out of circuit capacity for EV chargers, solar, or a garden office
If any of these sound familiar, it's worth getting a qualified electrician to take a look. An EICR can assess the full installation and identify any risks.
