What is a Turbocor Compressor?

Unlike positive displacement compressors, a Turbocor compressor uses centrifugal force to compress refrigerant gas.

The gas is drawn into the centre of the impeller and flung outward by centrifugal force, increasing its pressure.

What further differentiates turbocor compressors from its contemporary alternatives is its deployment of magnetic bearings.

These bearings suspend the rotating components without physical contact, reducing friction and wear.

Furthermore, turbocor compressors adjust impeller speed to match the cooling load.

What exactly is a Scroll Compressor?

A scroll compressor in a chiller uses two interleaved spiral scrolls, one stationary and one orbiting, to compress a refrigerant.

Refrigerant enters the compressor through the intake port. As the orbiting scroll moves, it traps the refrigerant between the two scrolls.

The motion of the orbiting scroll pushes the gas towards the centre, reducing its volume and increasing its pressure.

From there, the compressed refrigerant is expelled through the discharge port, located at the centre of the scroll assembly.

What does this mean for you?

With fewer moving parts in a scroll compressor, maintenance requirements reduce dramatically.

What exactly is a Screw Compressor?

A screw compressor within a chiller is a rotary device that uses two helical rotors to increase the pressure of refrigerant gas.

Refrigerant gas enters the compressor through an intake port.

As the rotors turn, they trap the gas in the space between the rotors and the casing.

The rotors continue to turn, decreasing the space between the rotors gradually and compressing the refrigerant gas.

From there, compressed refrigerant gas is then expelled through the discharge port and sent to the next phase of the process.

All sounds impressive – but what does all this mean?

A with a screw compressor offers improved efficiency at part-load compared to other alternatives – saving on energy costs outside of peak times.
