Revisiting a September read: Multistatic UWB and the Intelligent Cabin

Ultra-wideband is already well established for digital key, but its role in the vehicle may be expanding significantly.

In this AutoSens interview, Yaohui Liu, EMEA FAE & Marketing Manager at Calterah, explains how synchronized multistatic UWB could support child presence detection, vital-sign monitoring and broader occupant sensing without relying on cameras.

The discussion also looks at why synchronization matters, how distributed UWB nodes can improve resolution and reduce blind spots, and the practical challenges still standing between prototype systems and large-scale deployment.

One particularly interesting point is the potential to reuse UWB hardware already installed for digital key, creating additional sensing capability without necessarily adding a completely new sensor system.

Instead of relying on one huge end-to-end model to handle every possible driving scenario, Autobrains is taking a more modular approach with Agentic AI - using specialised Driving Agents that can be activated depending on the situation.

The thinking is simple: if a system can reason more selectively, it could potentially use compute more efficiently, respond better to unusual scenarios and make individual behaviours easier to improve and validate.
It also raises a bigger question for the industry.

As we move towards more advanced autonomy, do we really need to keep adding more sensors, more compute and ever-larger models - or could smarter architecture be the more scalable route?

Igal also discusses how this approach could change validation, with systems generating and testing new edge cases in a continuous loop rather than waiting for every scenario to appear in the real world.

🚕 INDUSTRY NEWS: WAYMO SETS OUT ITS VISION FOR LONDON

Waymo has outlined how it plans to bring fully autonomous passenger services to London, using the UK’s new Automated Passenger Services permitting framework. The company says its approach is designed to support London’s wider transport goals around safety, accessibility, public transport connectivity, congestion and local investment.

The announcement also gives a useful look at how autonomous driving is moving from technology development into the realities of city-scale deployment - regulation, infrastructure, public acceptance and integration with existing transport systems all included.
