“The Angels in Fatigues”

Colonel Ruby Bradley of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps became a prisoner of war in the Philippines in 1941, spending 37 months in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp.

Despite unimaginable conditions, she continued to care for others, assisting in 230 major surgeries, delivering 13 babies, and secretly smuggling food and medicine to fellow prisoners.

With such great compassion and courage, Ruby and her fellow nurses became known as the “Angels in Fatigues.”

After the camp was liberated in 1945, she continued her military career, eventually retiring as one of the most decorated women in U.S military history, with 34 medals and awards to her name.

We are honoured to support the VJ Day Remembrance Service, taking place at the Burma Star Memorial at 11:00am on Saturday 22 August.

The service marks VJ Day and commemorates the end of the Second World War, providing an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

As our team will be attending the service, our High Street shop will be temporarily closed during this time.
