Another one taking shape nicely 👇

There’s something satisfying about seeing a build go from foundations to actual walls.

This one is coming together with the brickwork and blockwork going up together, including:
🔹 External brickwork
🔹 Internal blockwork
🔹 Window and door openings
🔹 Corners and returns
🔹 Getting everything lined up ready for the next stage

It’s one of those stages where the quality of the work really matters, because once everything else starts going in, it's much harder to correct small things.

Still plenty to do on this one, but we're happy with how it's coming together so far.

“Neat”, “light mortar” and “a natural blend” can mean different things to different people. A sample panel gives the project team something visible to discuss.

It can bring the brick, mortar, joint finish and overall appearance together before a much larger area is committed. It also creates a useful reference for later conversations about the intended finish.

The panel does not replace the specification or professional judgement. It helps turn those requirements into a shared visual expectation.

When genuine Doughty project evidence becomes available, an approved sample and the completed elevation would make strong proof content. Until then, this remains general education.

A cut brick is not automatically poor workmanship. Some details genuinely need one. The question is whether the cut looks intentional and belongs to a coordinated elevation.

Very narrow pieces beside an opening or at the end of a run can be a sign that dimensions were resolved too late. Once the work reaches site, the bricklayer may be trying to reconcile several fixed points at once.

Good design coordination considers where the bond will finish, how openings relate to the brick module and where unavoidable cuts can sit comfortably.

The smallest piece can tell you a lot about the thinking behind the whole wall.

A hold point is an agreed moment to review something before the next stage makes it harder to see or change.

On repeated work, that check can be especially valuable. Confirming a reference opening, junction or feature early gives the project team a clearer standard before the same detail appears across more plots or elevations.

A hold point should be planned and specific: what is being reviewed, who needs to agree it and what allows the work to continue. Used well, it is part of progress rather than the opposite of it.

This is general quality-planning education, not evidence of Doughty’s own procedure.

The finished appearance of brickwork is affected by what happens while it is being built.

Storage, protection from weather, mortar control and the way fresh work is left at the end of the day all influence the result. Heavy-handed cleaning later is not a substitute for good site practice throughout.

Where cleaning is required, the method should suit the brick, mortar and manufacturer’s guidance. An approach that works on one material may damage another.

The wider lesson is simple: protect the finish as the work progresses. Prevention is usually more controlled than trying to repair the appearance afterwards.

The brick dimensions, structural support, frame, sill, insulation and weathering details all need to relate to the same opening. If one piece of information changes, the effect may reach more than one trade or drawing.

That is why a clean finished reveal is not only a bricklaying detail. It is the visible result of coordination between design, procurement and site delivery.

Quick one on extensions — matching new brickwork to an existing house is one of the trickier parts of the job.

Brick colour, mortar shade, coursing — get any of it slightly off and it stands out for years. It's something we spend real time getting right on every job.

“Find the same red brick” sounds simple. Existing brickwork has more going on than colour alone.

Size, texture, variation, mortar tone, joint profile, bond and the way the old wall has weathered all influence whether new work sits comfortably beside it.

Sometimes an exact match is unavailable. The aim then is not to pretend the difference does not exist, but to agree the most appropriate visual approach with the designer, supplier and client.

Samples and reference work can make that conversation much clearer before a full elevation is committed.
