When budgets are tight, it’s easy for equipment like nurse bags to be seen as optional, but the evidence tells a very different story.
A 12 month cost saving study around dressings by Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Trust showed our bags paid for themselves in just 10.5 months. If similar savings were achieved nationally, that’s around £1.3 million every year saved by the NHS — just from reducing dressing wastage through better bag design and organisation. And that’s before considering:
• Expired kit lost in car boots
• Time spent re-ordering and re-packing
• Fatigue and MSK strain from poorly designed carry equipment
• IPC risks from non-wipeable bags
When kit is easy to access, carry and clean between visits, staff wellbeing improves — and so does patient safety.
With end-of-year budgets approaching, now is the time to look at nurse bags not as a cost, but as an invest-to-save opportunity.
