A leaked cask means wasted product, contamination, and lost revenue 🍺
Since 1983, we’ve been manufacturing two-piece plastic shives at our facility in Burton-upon-Trent to keep stainless steel cask fleets sealed properly from the filling line to the cellar.
Our design focuses on practical engineering to handle real-world brewery conditions:
🔹 The Two-Piece Advantage: We pair a rigid LLDPE body to withstand heavy broaching impact with a softer EVA sealing band.
🔹 Compensating for Wear: Cask bushels inevitably wear down over time. While a completely rigid shive will start to leak on an older cask, our flexible sealing band deforms to absorb that variation—keeping your older casks in active service longer.
🔹 The No. 5 Shive: Our standard setup for cask bushels that are still in good overall condition.
🔹 The No. 4.5 Shive: Built with a larger sealing membrane for extra compression, providing a practical fix for worn bushels prone to intermittent leaks.
We mould these to a strict +/-0.1mm dimensional tolerance, so you get the exact same fit batch after batch. Because we manufacture them directly in the UK, you get shorter lead times and a much more reliable supply when seasonal demand peaks.
