INSECT SPOTLIGHT – Muscidifurax raptor

M. raptor is one half of our Biowasp+ and a powerful parasite that helps to combat pest flies such as the Common and Lesser House Flies. It is smaller than s. cameroni (the other wasp in Biowasp+) at just 1-2mm long and can be distinguished from other tiny black bugs by its long antenna and shiny body.

The wasp functions as a parasite, feeding from, and laying eggs in the pupal cases of pest flies. Our wasps will sting the pupa, without laying its own eggs, killing the pest fly and releasing pupal fluid, which the wasps then feed on. After mating, the female will then also lay eggs inside pupae, killing the host and more m. raptor emerging 2-3 weeks later.

Optimal time to start treating with Biowasp can vary, as pest flies will begin to breed as soon as the weather grows warmer. Typically, starting in March-April will ensure you keep on top of the flies before they become a problem.

Biowasp can be used in combination with other BESTICO products such as Biomite and our Bucket Fly Traps. For more information, including guidance on usage and site assessments, head to the link in our bio, send us an email on [email protected] or call 01284 636362

This Sunday, 7th June, farms across the UK will be opening their gates to the public for Open Farm Sunday 🚜

From meeting calves and seeing milking demonstrations, to learning where food comes from, Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic opportunity to connect consumers with British farming and showcase the hard work happening on farms every single day.

If you are taking part this weekend, thank you for helping tell the story of British agriculture. 🇬🇧

Meet the team – Caitlin O’Leary

Farming enthusiast born and bred in Yorkshire. I spend my days travelling around the North of England & Scotland helping farmers tackle fly problems, usually digging about in 💩 (glamorous)

Most of my miles are soundtracked by country music & podcast. Evening downtime is usually watching someone else’s lambing chaos or day to day dairying routine on YouTube… it counts as a hobby okay...

I’m endlessly curious and love asking questions on the farms I visit. There’s always something new to learn and no two farms are the same. Having previously worked an office job, I’m incredibly grateful to be out on farm getting stuck in. Having said that, I know next to nothing about machinery and aspire to get better with tractors. A funny memory from my teens involves the simple task of leading a trailer stacked full of bales going terribly wrong 😬

Outside of work I enjoy volunteering with , helping out at a retirement livery yard, and lending a hand with sheep at home. I’ve also got two dogs who provide entertainment on tap.

Coming from a pig farming background, I can honestly say I really, really love cows… 🐄

Stable Fly is the bane of so many animals and is one of the most widespread flies in the UK. The adult is 5-7mm long, identified by a light brown colour, with a pale stripe on the thorax. Stable Fly bear thick hairs across the thorax and abdomen, and their prominent proboscis can distinguish this from Horse Fly. They can be particularly troublesome in milking parlours and in grazing areas, as they follow CO2 and heat produced by animals to find food and breeding grounds, but the larvae can be identified by its pale yellow to creamy white colour and it has two rear spiracles and a mouth hook like most fly maggots.

Stable Fly can breed in and wet fermenting or rotting organic matter, giving them the nickname “lawn-mower fly” as the larvae can often be found in the grass trimmings on the underside of lawn mowers – getting egg control to these breeding areas is the key to controlling them.

For treating the Stable Fly, we recommend Biomite, a mite that eats fly eggs and fly larvae, which can be used in combination with other BESTICO products to attack other pest fly species.
