Friday Project | Brunel University

As education gets back into full swing, we’re revisiting the Wilfred Brown Building.

Six SkyView rooflights for Brunel University’s £13.8m engineering faculty:

➡️ Four atrium units at 1514 × 3514mm
➡️Two stairwell units
➡️Thermally broken
➡️SN70 solar control glass

The brief: maximum daylight, minimum thermal cost.

It was also the second time the University’s specifiers chose to work with us.

Repeat specification is often the strongest endorsement.

A lovely example of how much difference a flat glass rooflight can make in a kitchen.

This Sunsquare rooflight brings natural light right into the heart of the home, helping the space feel brighter, calmer and more open, without taking anything away from the room's character.

These large panes of glass have arrived on site, ready for glazing. 👀

For this project, glazing the unit before delivery would have pushed it beyond the permitted lifting weight, so the glass needed to be installed on site.

On-site glazing may also be required due to factors such as:

• The overall weight of the unit
• Crane lifting restrictions
• The size and complexity of the assembly
• Limited access to the installation area

In some cases, installers may even need to carry the glass up multiple flights of stairs to reach a rooftop installation.

Every project brings its own logistical challenges, which is why careful planning, coordination and the right glazing strategy are essential.

Solar control and thermal insulation are not the same thing.

Solar control and thermal insulation are often confused, but they are not the same.

Solar control helps manage heat entering through glazing from sunlight, while thermal insulation helps reduce heat transferring between the inside and outside.
