🏭 SIZE — no bigger than a large industrial unit. It would sit discreetly on the outskirts of town, not dominate the landscape.

👷 JOBS — hundreds of highly skilled, well paid local jobs during construction and operation. The kind of jobs Buxton needs.

☢️ CLEAN — nuclear produces just 12g of CO₂ per kWh over its entire lifecycle. That's cleaner than solar, on a par with wind, and 68 TIMES cleaner than coal.

🌡️ HEATING — surplus heat from the plant could be piped directly into local homes, slashing energy bills across the town. Perfect for a place as cold as Buxton! 🥶

The technology exists RIGHT NOW. The Rolls-Royce SMR design is the most advanced in the UK and ready to build.

There's a lot of misinformation out there about nuclear energy, so let's look at the actual science.

Nuclear produces just 12 grams of CO₂ per kilowatt hour over its ENTIRE lifecycle — including mining the fuel, building the plant, and decommissioning it at the end. That makes it 68 TIMES cleaner than coal.

💡 A few facts that might change your mind:

⚡ Nuclear runs at over 93% capacity — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whatever the weather. Wind manages 35%. Solar 25%.

🗑️ ALL the nuclear waste ever produced in the UK would fit in just 10 double-decker buses. A coal plant pumps out millions of tonnes of toxic ash and gases EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

☢️ TEN ADVANTAGES FOR BUXTON TO HAVE NUCLEAR ☢️
There's a lot of talk about Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) across the UK right now — and I've been thinking about how much sense it would make to have one right here on our doorstep. Here's why Buxton could genuinely benefit:
1️⃣ Energy Independence — Buxton is remote and sits at the end of the supply chain. Local nuclear power means no more vulnerability to grid outages or price spikes.
2️⃣ Clean Baseload Power — Unlike wind or solar, nuclear generates 24/7 zero-carbon electricity whatever the weather. And we get plenty of that up here! ☁️
3️⃣ Real Jobs — Construction, operation and maintenance would bring high-skilled, well-paid, long-term employment to the area.
4️⃣ Cheaper Power for Local Industry — Our quarrying and manufacturing businesses are massive energy users. Cheap, reliable local power would keep them competitive and keep jobs here.
5️⃣ Cheaper Heating for Homes — SMRs produce huge amounts of heat that can be piped directly into homes and businesses — brilliant for a town as cold as ours! 🥶
6️⃣ Green Hydrogen — Surplus energy could produce green hydrogen to fuel local transport and industry — helping everyone move away from expensive diesel.
7️⃣ Small Footprint — Forget the old image of nuclear. Modern SMRs are compact and can be sited discreetly without wrecking the landscape we all love. 🏔️
8️⃣ Grid Resilience — The whole Peak District would benefit from a local generation source. Rural communities and businesses would no longer be at the fragile end of national supply.

Excellent question - this is where the economics actually get interesting.

Buxton's energy needs (rough estimate):

~11,000 homes: 3-4 MW
Hotels/tourism: 1-2 MW
Businesses/industrial: 2-3 MW
Total: roughly 7-10 MW average demand
Rolls-Royce SMR output:

470 MW of electrical power
So you'd have MASSIVE spare capacity - you could power Buxton about 50 times over with one SMR.

What this means for your campaign:

This is actually GREAT news, not a problem:

1. Revenue stream: Sell excess power to the National Grid. This is how you pay for the reactor:

Buxton uses 10 MW
Sell 460 MW to the grid
Income from grid sales pays for the plant + gives Buxton cheap/free electricity
2. Economic development: Attract energy-hungry businesses:

Data centers (AI companies need MASSIVE power)
Manufacturing
Hydrogen production facilities
Crypto mining (controversial but uses tons of power)
3. Regional power hub: Sell power to neighboring towns:

Bakewell, Matlock, Chapel-en-le-Frith, etc.
Become the energy provider for the Peak District
4. Future-proofing:
