Arfon Timber Frames Ltd

Arfon Timber Frames Ltd We are bespoke timber frame builders based in north Wales, specialising is high quality off-site construction.

We work across the private and public sectors, crafting energy efficient, low impact buildings from local and sustainable materials. Our background is in traditional timber framing, which calls for both exacting attention to detail and an understanding of and respect for the material of our craft. From this starting point we have developed our own panelised enclosure system, fusing the best of tra

ditional and contemporary building methods to create structures that will stand the test of time. We pride ourselves on our collaborative working style, working closely with our customers and teaming up with specialists across the construction industry to hone our bespoke designs. We believe that by embracing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and innovative technologies, we can minimize our environmental impact while creating healthier, more comfortable living spaces.

This week we topped out a Passivhaus annex on Anglesey - a 70m² single-storey annex to a traditional farmhouse, designed for comfortable, low-energy living.

Despite a very narrow access track and some challenging coastal winds, we were able to bring the full timber frame shell to a weathertight stage in just four days using our off-site panelised system. That speed not only keeps programmes tight, but also reduces exposure to the elements — which definitely helped this week.

Thanks to the teams at Caernarfon Commercials / CCH and Buckley's Mobile Crane Service for making a tricky lift run smoothly.

Next up: windows, cladding and roofing. Looking forward to seeing this one take shape.

As usual, we’ve been too busy building to keep up with the updates, but here’s a quick snapshot of what we’ve been working on over the past few months.

From a balcony and a bird hide, to a subterranean passivhaus, a disabled-access affordable home and a timber-framed porch, it’s been a varied run of projects!

We’ll be sharing more over the coming weeks, including an upcoming traditionally timber-framed Passivhaus we’re particularly excited about.

Throwback: Cae Wllf Extension

Cae Wllf is a traditional stone built house on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. Working with Evergreen Architects, we delivered a 60m² two-storey extension—adding a bright, spacious living room and kitchen-diner on the ground floor, with a new bedroom above.

The timber-clad design balances tradition and modernity. Facing the village, it continues the rhythm of the old stone windows; on the side, it breaks out with a more playful, contemporary touch.

Extensions are always tricky—especially with historic properties. They demand meticulous planning and precision to stitch old and new together seamlessly. Many panel manufacturers avoid this kind of work. We’ve leaned into the challenge, developing our own panelised system to achieve exceptional results.

Our system allows most of the structure to be prefabricated off-site, keeping disruption to a minimum and ensuring a fast, efficient build. The 350mm wall panels, packed with recycled cellulose insulation, deliver excellent thermal performance. A ground source heat pump provides heating and cooling for both the house and a nearby studio.

As always, sustainability came first. Renewable, reclaimed, and locally sourced materials—combined with off-site fabrication—result in a durable, low-impact build that meets modern standards while respecting its setting. The extension feels right at home in Snowdonia’s dramatic landscape.

Carpenter/Green Builder Wanted!

There's currently an opportunity for someone to join our team. We're looking for a carpenter or green builder to work with us in crafting some of North Wales' most exciting building projects.

We are passionate about creating truly sustainable buildings. Ours is the team behind Wales' first Passive House Premium project (the highest standard to energy efficiency recognised in the world) with many other high performance green building projects in the pipeline.

Our small, dynamic team is committed to staying at the forefront of green building by continually evolving our processes and material choices. Rooted in traditional timber joinery, we champion the use of high-quality, locally sourced timber and strive to eliminate steel and concrete from our builds. We’re looking for someone who shares this ethos and passion for sustainable construction.

We believe in continuous professional development and invest heavily in our team—both by preserving and revitalising heritage carpentry skills and by embracing the latest innovations in the industry. Unlike many construction companies, we do not rely on subcontractors; our team is made up of permanent, full-time employees. Because off-site manufacture is highly skilled and technical, we see job retention as essential. Our approach is to provide secure, well-paid employment, strong training opportunities, and the chance to do truly fulfilling work.

This opportunity would be right for you if you're interested in off site timber frame construction, passive house and traditional post and beam framing. The right candidate for the job will have excellent attention to detail and be receptive to new approaches and ideas about building.

The job is based primarily at our workshop in Caernarfon, where we craft timber frame elements to precise tolerances before transporting them to site for installation.

Working hours are 8am until 5pm Monday to Friday (42.5 hours per week).
Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Benefits include 30 days paid holiday, contributory pension scheme, PPE and tool allowances, training, discounts and working away premium.

To apply send your CV and a covering letter explaining why you're the right candidate for the job to [email protected]

The closing date for applications is 12 noon of Friday 10th October 2025.

We’re making great progress at Glasdy, our new-build project in Bethel.

The shell is now almost completely airtight, with all membranes, taping, vapour barriers, and weatherproof layers carefully installed. Achieving this requires a meticulous eye for detail, but it’s worth it—the result will be a draft-free home that retains heat efficiently.

The large glazed dormer had to be built on site, keeping our carpenters busy on the scaffold cutting roof timbers. We’re now close to handing the site over to the next phase: roofing and first-fix wiring. After that, we’ll return to install the timber cladding and fine timber detailing.

These excellent drone photographs were kindly provided by the project architects at Evergreen.

It’s awe-inspiring to see the progress on this epic hill farm renovation. Watching the building come back to life with local materials and true craftsmanship is something special, and it’s a real pleasure to be part of the journey.

The oak roof system we supplied, with its traditionally framed king post trusses, is now in place. This was hand crafted by our team at our Caernarfon workshop from home grown oak.

If you’re planning a project of your own, we’d love to hear from you. We design and build bespoke roof systems for everything from heritage renovations to new builds.

We’ve been busy these past couple of weeks installing a brand-new high-performance home in Bethel. If you drove through the village last week and spotted a giant crane — that was us!

Designed by our long-term collaborators, Evergreen Architects, this home is:
▫️ 178m² + 56m² mezzanine attic
▫️ 3 bedrooms
▫️ Built with our eco-SIP closed timber frame system

All roof and wall panels were manufactured off-site, complete with insulation and (almost all) windows and doors already installed. Thanks to this approach — and a little help from Kev and his crane we raised all three floors in just five days!

The house is being built with a fabric-first approach, minimising concrete and steel in favour of sustainable materials. The walls are insulated with breathable wood fibre, and the airtight, precision-fit eco-SIP panels mean maximum performance with minimal waste.

When complete, the home will be finished with a slate roof (true to local tradition) and a timber-clad exterior, blending performance, sustainability, and beauty in equal measure.

We’ll share more as the build progresses — but for now, here’s to teamwork, cranes, and building greener homes for the future

We’ve been quiet for a while, but here’s something special!

We recently completed this project for a repeat customer on Anglesey. This L-shaped range combines a garden room and deck with an attached workshop. Designed and built entirely by us, this space makes the most of the stunning surroundings, linking inside and out for a seamless connection with nature.

It’s fully Building Regulations compliant, built to last, and crafted with sustainability at its core. Clad in local larch, topped with a reclaimed Welsh slate roof, and insulated with breathable wood fibre, this project uses renewable, reclaimed, and local materials wherever possible. The panelised timber frame was precision-built off site for a high-performance, low-impact result.

We’re incredibly proud of this one and wish our clients many a long summer evening on their deck!

We have workshop envy!
We just completed this 7.0 x 8.5m custom workshop for customers in the Conwy valley. It’s got space to swing several cats, loads of natural light and a truss strong enough to hoist an engine. The design features lots of careful detailing, which, paired with high quality materials will ensure this remains strong and weather tight for years to come.
