πŸ™Œ PROJECT COMPLETE: CAERAU ELY FOOTBALL CLUB ⚽

The action has kicked off at Cwrt Yr Ala Road, with Caerau Ely Football Club returning home following the redevelopment of the site and installation of a brand-new 3G playing surface.

Huge congratulations to everyone at the club and all involved in reaching this major milestone. It's been fantastic to play our part in helping bring the club back home, working alongside our partners at Cymru Football Foundation and Sports Labs. 🀝

The redevelopment, made possible through investment from the Cymru Football Foundation, has transformed the playing space into a year-round surface that will support the club, local grassroots teams and future community initiatives.

The scope of works included:
βœ… Replacement of the existing natural turf with a new 3G playing surface
βœ… Installation of new perimeter fencing
βœ… Upgrades to spectator areas to enhance the matchday experience

🌱⚠️ GRASSROOTS PITCH RECOVERY: ADVICE & AWARENESS FOLLOWING THE WELSH DROUGHT ⚠️🌱

Records have been broken! 🚨 But not the typical records we like to see. After one of the driest periods we've experienced in recent years, many football and rugby pitches across Wales are showing signs of significant stress, with large areas of brown, dormant grass and extremely dry soil conditions.

GOOD NEWS πŸ‘‰ Dormant grass isn't necessarily dead. πŸŒ±πŸ’€ With cooler temperatures and more consistent rainfall forecast over the coming weeks, many pitches have an opportunity to recover naturally if managed correctly.

With that in mind, we've put together some practical guidance to help clubs and grounds teams manage their playing surfaces through the recovery period:

➑️ Helping water get back into the soil
➑️ Allowing time for recovery
➑️ Fertiliser application
➑️ Mowing practices
➑️ Thinking about the long game

βœ… HELP WATER GET BACK INTO THE SOIL

Following prolonged dry weather, many soils can become hydrophobic, meaning they repel water rather than absorb it. Consider applying a wetting agent ahead of forecast rainfall to improve water infiltration and help maximise the benefit of any rain that arrives. The Grounds Management Association recommends wetting agents as part of drought recovery programmes where hydrophobic conditions exist.

βœ… BE PATIENT AND ALLOW RECOVERY

The temptation can be to immediately return to normal maintenance, but recovery takes time. As moisture returns, allow the grass plant to rebuild its energy reserves and produce new leaf growth before putting it under additional stress.

βœ… CONSIDER A FERTILISER APPLICATION

Once rainfall has returned and the grass is actively growing again, a balanced fertiliser application can help stimulate recovery and improve turf density. Avoid applying fertiliser to drought-stressed turf before moisture returns, as this can cause further stress or scorch.

βœ… ADJUST YOUR MOWING PRACTICES

Don't rush to cut the pitch back to its usual height.

βœ”οΈ Allow the sward to regain some strength first.
βœ”οΈ Maintain a slightly higher height of cut during recovery.
βœ”οΈ Follow the golden rule of removing no more than one-third of the leaf blade in any single cut.
βœ”οΈ If the grass remains dormant and isn't actively growing, leave it alone until growth resumes.

βœ… THINK LONG TERM

For clubs operating with limited budgets, the most cost-effective approach is often patience and good timing. A small investment in wetting agents, sensible nutrient inputs and careful mowing can make a significant difference to recovery heading into the autumn playing season.

Every pitch will recover at a different rate depending on soil type, usage levels and available maintenance resources. The key is to avoid rushing the process and give the grass the best possible conditions to recover.

🎯 The aim isn't simply to get pitches looking green again. It's about getting them back to a healthy, playable condition that can withstand the demands of the season ahead. πŸŒ±βš½πŸ‰

A big thank you to TSF Contracts Ltd for appointing us to play our part in this historic journey.

A recap of the project scope we're delivering:
βœ… Construction of a new FIFA Quality and World Rugby-compliant 3G pitch
βœ… Installation of new perimeter fencing
βœ… Shock pad installation
βœ… Supply and installation of sports equipment
βœ… Ongoing maintenance and aftercare

Exciting times ahead! πŸ™Œ

πŸ“£ CLIENT FEEDBACK πŸ“£

There's nothing more rewarding than receiving great feedback from a client, especially when you've been working alongside that organisation for many years. The strongest, longest-lasting partnerships are built on trust, collaboration and shared success. 🌱

We're delighted to share some kind words from Torfaen County Borough Council following the successful delivery of the new 3G facility at Cwmbran High School. Take a look at what they had to say, along with a few photos of the completed project. πŸ‘‡

"We have worked closely with SWSG on the successful delivery of several 3G pitches in Torfaen in the last 3 years.

In particular, we are delighted with the recent successful delivery of the new World Rugby and FIFA compliant 3G facility at Cwmbran High School by SWSG. From the outset, the team demonstrated exceptional professionalism, technical expertise, and a collaborative approach throughout every stage of the project.

A particularly significant aspect of the scheme was the complex drainage and SAB approval process. SWSG worked proactively alongside Torfaen County Borough Council and the wider design team to develop and refine a drainage solution that was fundamental in securing SAB approval without causing delay to the programme. In addition, SWSG provided valuable design assistance throughout the project, incorporating practical value engineering solutions that helped maximise efficiency and deliver best value without compromising quality or performance."

πŸ… What a fantastic Commonwealth Games! πŸ…

What a success the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has been. Our Director, Rob, and Commercial Manager, Andrew, had the privilege of attending as guests of Disability Sport Wales.

A huge THANK YOU to Fiona Reid, Tom Rogers, Dr Rachel Newport, Alex Jones, Stefano Antoniazzi and everyone at Disability Sport Wales for their warm hospitality.

It was a fun-packed couple of days, and we were hugely impressed by both the 3x3 Basketball and 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball competitions.

It was also great to catch up with and see in attendance Welsh Athletics CEO James Williams, Olympian Christian Malcolm and Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Now it's time to start planning a trip to India for the 2030 Commonwealth Games! πŸ˜‰
