🇬🇧 This is the summer internship I did a bit over 10 years ago at the Space Telescope Science Institute (the institute that performs the science operations for NASA’s Hubble telescope and JWST). The call for this year’s interns has opened. Consider applying if you are interested.

🇬🇧 A new image of the Pillars of the Creation made by combining a near-infrared light image (image 2) with a mid-infrared light image (image 3). In near-infrared we see freshly baked stars and in mid-infrared we see dust, an essential ingredient for star formation.

🇪🇸 Los pilares de la creación al combinar imágenes en infrarrojo cercano (imagen 2) e infrarrojo medio (imagen 3). En el infrarrojo cercano se observan estrellas “recién salidas del horno” y en infrarrojo medio polvo, un ingrediente esencial para la formación estelar.

🇬🇧 My account has been so quiet for some time, but I want to share with you that recently I started working as an Educator & Outreach Scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, where I'll be doing outreach for NASA's Universe of Learning, James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Telescope.

Ten years ago I started my journey in astronomy at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and I'm really happy to be back. I'll continue to spread the word about astronomy, inspire new generations to understand our universe (especially minorities), and continue to create role models.

🇪🇸 Mi cuenta ha estado tan inactiva últimamente, pero quiero compartirles que recientemente comencé a trabajar como Educadora y Científica de Divulgación de la Ciencia en el Instituto de Ciencias del Telescopio Espacial (STScI). Este es el centro de operaciones de los telescopios espaciales Hubble y James Webb. Mi trabajo consistirá en hacer divulgación para estos telescopios, para el programa de la NASA llamado Universo de Aprendizaje, y para el próximo Telescopio Espacial Nancy Grace Roman (¡el primero nombrado en honor a una astrónoma!).

Hace diez años comencé mi aventura en astronomía en el Instituto de Ciencias del Telescopio Espacial y estoy muy feliz de estar de regreso. Seguiré difundiendo información sobre astronomía y espero poder inspirar a las nuevas generaciones a comprender nuestro universo (especialmente a las minorías) y crear modelos a seguir.

🇬🇧 Today the first images from the James Webb space telescope were revealed!

1. SMACS 0723: a deep field image of our universe. This is the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe. Some of the farthest galaxies don’t even have a name yet!
2. Stephan’s Quintet: a pack of galaxies. For the first time, new details of the interactions in the group have been revealed.
3-4. Southern Ring planetary nebula: the last breath of a star. Hidden behind the gas and dust the new images revealed a pair of stars in the nebula's centre, and a hidden galaxy behind it. Can you spot them?
5. Carina Nebula: a star nursery. For the first time, we are seeing patches once invisible.
6. WASP-96 b: a watery world. This bar code belongs to a planet dancing closely around a Sun-like star. It reveals a clear water signature on the planet.

🇪🇸 ¡Hoy se revelaron las primeras imágenes del telescopio espacial James Webb!

1. SMACS 0723: la imagen de campo profundo de nuestro universo. Esta es la imagen infrarroja mas profunda y nítida del universo distante. ¡Algunas de las galaxias más lejanas aún no tienen nombre!
2. El quinteto de Stephan: una manada de galaxias. Por primera vez, se han revelado nuevos detalles de las interacciones en el grupo.
3-4. Nebulosa del Anillo del Sur: el último aliento de una estrella. Ocultas detrás del gas y el polvo, las nuevas imágenes revelaron un par de estrellas en el centro de la nebulosa planetaria y una galaxia oculta detrás. ¿Puedes encontrarlas?
5. Nebulosa de Carina: un criadero de estrellas. Por primera vez, estamos viendo parches que alguna vez fueron invisibles.
6. WASP-96 b: un planeta con agua. Este código de barras pertenece a un planeta que baila de cerca alrededor de una estrella similar al Sol. Revela agua en el planeta.

To celebrate this day, Dr Paola Pinilla (MPIA/UCL) and Dr Maria Claudia Ramírez-Tannus (MPIA) started the “Mothers in Astronomy” project which aims to: 1) amplify the voices of mothers in astronomy, 2) raise awareness of the challenges they face, 3) highlight the positive impact of motherhood on their careers, and 4) create collective empowerment by inspiring and supporting each other.

This resulted in a free book with the stories of more than 70 astronomers from around the world!

Para celebrar este día las Dras. Paola Pinilla y Maria Claudia Ramírez-Tannus comenzaron el proyecto “Madres en Astronomía”, cuyo objetivo es 1) amplificar las voces de las mamás astrónomas, 2) crear conciencia sobre los retos que enfrentan, 3) resaltar el impacto positivo de la maternidad en sus carreras, y 4) crear empoderamiento colectivo inspirándose y apoyándose mutuamente.
