If you've had new brickwork done recently and noticed a chalky white film appearing on the surface, don't panic, it's almost certainly efflorescence rather than anything gone wrong.

➡️ It happens when moisture inside the brick or mortar evaporates and leaves salt deposits behind on the surface as it dries out. Completely normal on new work, especially after a spell of warm weather followed by rain, which sums up most British summers rather well.

➡️ The good news is it's temporary in the vast majority of cases. A dry brush and a bit of patience usually sorts it, and it tends to fade on its own within the first year or two as the brickwork fully cures. Where it's worth keeping an eye on is if it keeps returning heavily in the same spot, which can point to a moisture source that needs looking into.

Why do old boundary walls start crumbling in the first place?

Old garden and boundary walls don't just fall apart for no reason, there's usually a clear cause ⬇️

Most older walls were built with lime mortar rather than cement, which is actually a good thing when it's maintained properly. Lime is soft and flexible, letting the wall move slightly and moisture escape rather than getting trapped.

➡️ The problem starts when that mortar wears thin over the decades. Once it fails, water gets into the bricks themselves, and repeated freezing and thawing causes the brick faces to crack and flake away.

Fixing it properly isn't just a case of slapping fresh mortar over the top. Damaged bricks need cutting out individually and replacing, and any repointing has to use a lime mix that matches what's already there. Use the wrong mortar and you're often storing up the exact same problem for a few years down the line.

It's one of the more satisfying repairs we do because the wall genuinely gets a second life rather than needing to come down entirely.

Gave this old boundary wall in Hatfield a second life 🌿

The bricks and mortar had taken a real battering over the years, cracked, crumbling and letting damp creep in where it shouldn't. Because it's a lime mortar wall we couldn't just patch it with anything to hand, lime needs matching carefully or it starts causing problems all over again.

We cut out the damaged bricks one by one, replaced what needed replacing and repointed the whole wall from top to bottom. What was looking pretty tired now stands strong and looks the part again, hopefully for a good few decades yet.

Always a good feeling bringing an older wall back rather than watching it get torn down and started from scratch.

Choosing the right bricklayer isn’t just about finding the cheapest quote.❌

In the UK, there isn’t a general licence required to work as a bricklayer, so it’s always worth checking experience, previous projects and the quality of someone’s work before starting your build.

Before agreeing to anything, ask to see recent examples of their work. Ideally, look for projects similar to yours and don’t be afraid to ask questions.👋🏼

Make sure you understand exactly what’s included in the quote too. A clear breakdown of labour, materials and any potential extras helps avoid surprises later on.

And don’t forget to ask about insurance. A professional tradesperson should always be happy to provide details.📝

Taking a little extra time at the start can make a huge difference to the finished result.

There's something satisfying about a job that just makes a room work better 🙂

This kitchen had an old external door that had stopped being useful years ago, mostly just letting in cold air and eating into wall space that could be put to better use. Rather than patch around it, we closed the opening up completely and made it part of the wall again.

It's not a flashy transformation and it doesn't need to be. Sometimes the best result is a room that simply feels warmer and a bit more practical than it did before.

Thirty bricks replaced after spalling on this one ☝️

Spalling happens when moisture gets into a brick and freezing weather does the rest, the face just starts flaking away. Left long enough it spreads to the bricks around it too, so it's worth sorting sooner rather than later.

Every wall starts with the boring bit done right 🧱
There's more going on in a cavity wall than people realise, even this early on.

You've got your block inner leaf, insulation in the middle keeping the building warm, and a brick outer leaf doing the weather resisting. Then there's the damp proof course, that black membrane you can see running through, stopping moisture travelling up from ground level into the structure.

Get any one of those layers wrong at this stage and you're storing up problems for years down the line. Get them right early and nobody ever thinks about it again, which is honestly the goal.

Ever wondered how flint walls actually stay standing?

Flint is one of those materials that looks simple until you actually try to build with it. Every stone is a different shape, so there's no such thing as a standard course. It's less about laying and more about fitting, almost like a jigsaw where every piece needs coaxing into place.🧩

That's why you'll almost always see brick used alongside flint on East Anglian buildings, at the corners, around windows and doors. Brick gives the structure straight lines and strength where flint simply can't provide them on its own.

Working on flintwork is an old skill and it takes patience. Get the mortar mix wrong or rush the coursing and the wall won't hold its shape the way it should. It's one of our favourite jobs precisely because there's no rushing it.👏

Boundary walls don't get enough credit 🧱

They're often the last thing people think about when planning garden work, yet they do a lot of quiet jobs at once. Marking your boundary properly, giving you privacy, holding back soil on sloped gardens and adding a bit of kerb appeal while they're at it.

The trick with a good boundary wall is what you can't see. Proper foundations for the height and ground conditions, correct drainage so water doesn't sit against the brick, and consistent coursing so it stays straight for decades rather than years.

We've been out this week building exactly that, string lines up and levels checked every couple of courses. Slow and steady wins with brickwork, there's no shortcut that doesn't come back to bite you later.

There's something worth knowing if you're planning any brickwork this year ⬇️

The UK construction industry is facing a serious skills shortage right now. Fewer people are training as bricklayers, experienced tradesmen are retiring, and the gap between demand and availability is growing.

What that means for homeowners is simple. The good ones get booked up fast.

Over 20 years of experience across Cambridgeshire and East Anglia doesn't just mean we know what we're doing. It means we care about getting it right. Every course laid level, every joint finished properly, every job handed over clean.
