Hi everyone!

I hope that you are all enjoying a wonderful holiday, wherever you happen to be. As the new year approaches, I would like to thank everyone who helped us to keep the Whiston Society going over this difficult year. First and foremost, I would like to thank my amazing committee for doing their utmost to organise new ways to keep us together despite restrictions, from the Battle of the Seven Cs to Alpha-bet you didn't know that! However, all of this would have not been worth it if not for our members pitching in and taking part, by representing Clare at our science society quizzes or by contributing articles.

Committee applications

If you would like to take part in creating the Whiston Society and organising exciting events, I would love to hear from you by e-mail or via our page! Usually, we would be looking for people to fill the following roles:

- President
- Vice-president
- Treasurer
- Speakers officer(s)
- Social secretary
- Publicity officer(s)

However, if there is a particular role that you would like to take up within the society, or any ideas that you might have for future events, I would love to hear more about them.

Varsity Sci 2021

I would also like to encourage everyone to come along to a joint online conference organised by Oxbridge’s student-run science societies coming up on 30th September and 1st October! This is a brilliant opportunity to hear more about research conducted at the two universities, as well as hearing from experts in their fields – at least two Nobel Prize laureates are booked to speak already! Check out the Facebook event (facebook.com/events/s/varsity-sci-2021/329790112145705/) to find out more.

Finally, I would like to encourage everyone to apply for a position with the Whiston committee and to take up this opportunity to shape our society as it comes out of the difficulties of the past year and a half, as socialising on a larger scale becomes feasible again. I look forward to seeing how our society will develop over the upcoming year!

Science love,

Krzysztof

Whiston Society president, 2020-2021

This drug is SUPER INTERESTING because a) it could significantly improve the lives of sufferers of spinal muscular atrophy b) it uses viruses for ⭐good⭐ and c) it's the most expensive drug in the world- $2 million! 💰😮

How does it work? Why is it so expensive? Read to find out (try not to shed a tear as you read the final words of this incredible article series:))))
