⚙️ Plunge milling a brake caliper? Watch the tool strategy in action. 👀

Brake calipers demand stability, accuracy and reliable machining, especially when working with cast iron and low-rigidity sections.

This special slot mill approach combines:

✔ Low cutting forces to help prevent chatter
✔ Tough tangential inserts for machining stability
✔ 4-corner insert design
✔ Right & left-hand cutting edges
✔ Improved reliability in demanding plunge milling

A good example of how tool geometry and machining strategy work together in automotive manufacturing. 🚗⚙️

⚙️Monday machining inspiration: small component, big performance gains.

This week’s NTK success story looks at external turning of a SUS304 valve pin using the TMV-WP chipbreaker with 650 grade.

The results:
✔ 2× higher feed rate — 0.10 vs 0.05 mm/rev
✔ 2.5× longer tool life — 5,000 vs 2,000 pcs/edge
✔ Better surface finish
✔ Excellent anti-adhesion performance to help reduce built-up edge

A good example of how the right chipbreaker + grade combination can make a significant difference in miniature machining.

🌀What makes a head-changeable drill useful in production?

It’s not just about changing the head quickly. DrillMeister combines exchangeable-head drilling with stable performance, predictable tool life and application-specific geometries.

In this Reel, watch the drilling process closely 👀
⚙️ G-code: G84
▪ Blind hole: f = 0.20 mm/rev | S = 1091 rpm
▪ Through hole: f = 0.12 mm/rev | S = 1091 rpm

From general-purpose DMP to high-accuracy DMC, flat-edge DMF, tough DMH, non-ferrous DMN and stainless/exotic-material DMM geometries, the head can be matched to the machining challenge.

💡Note: The demonstration was performed dry so the machining could be seen clearly. Cutting fluid is recommended for the application.

What matters most in your drilling operations: accuracy, tool life or cycle time?

🔍 What does CNMG 120408 actually mean?

It’s more than a stock code — it tells you key information about the insert:

⚙️ C → 80° diamond shape
⚙️ N → 0° clearance / negative insert
⚙️ M → Tolerance class
⚙️ G → Insert/mounting configuration
📐 12 → 12.7 mm inscribed circle
📐 04 → 4.76 mm thickness
📐 08 → 0.8 mm corner radius

But fitment is only the first step.

The right geometry, chipbreaker, grade, coating and edge preparation also need to match the material and machining conditions.

A useful selection sequence:
Holder → Operation → Material → Geometry → Grade → Nose Radius → Cutting Conditions

2× Tool Life on Mill Roll Turning ⚙️

When machining GGG-60 mill rolls, wear resistance and toughness need to work together.

In this application, NTK’s 533 ceramic grade delivered:

▪ 2× tool life vs. the competing coated ceramic
▪ Cutting speed: 60 m/min
▪ Feed: 0.4 mm/rev
▪ DOC: 1.75 mm
▪ 6 passes, dry machining

The key? Strong resistance to flank and notch wear while maintaining the toughness required for demanding mill roll turning.

Sometimes the biggest productivity gain is simply keeping the cutting edge working for longer. 🔧

👉 What limits tool life most in your mill roll applications: flank wear, notch wear or fracture?

When lower cutting speeds are unavoidable, tool life shouldn't have to suffer🫠

Tungaloy's new BX5015 CBN grade is engineered specifically for stable machining of gray cast iron, particularly where large or irregular components limit cutting speed.

What makes it interesting?
▪ Strong wear resistance at lower cutting speeds
▪ High chipping resistance for interrupted cuts
▪ Improved dimensional stability
▪ 25 insert options across different applications
▪ 2× tool life achieved in a bearing housing application

A useful reminder that CBN performance isn't only about pushing cutting speed, matching the grade to the actual machining conditions matters. 🎯

A drill head designed specifically for cast iron⚙️

The DrillMeister DMR uses radius cutting edges to support smoother through-hole drilling while helping reduce cutting-edge stress, burr formation and workpiece chipping at breakthrough.

🔧 Setup:
• DMR165 AH9130
• Vc = 120 m/min
• f = 0.35 mm/rev
• Material: FC200 / GG20 / EN-GJL-200
• Through-spindle air supply

High feed on hardened steel… but look at that surface finish👀

This turning demo combines a CBN grade with wiper geometry + chipbreaker to maintain a clean machined surface even at an unusually high feed.

⚙️ Cutting conditions:
▪ Vc = 120 m/min
▪ f = 0.5 mm/rev
▪ ap = 0.1 mm
▪ Material: SCM415(H)

The 0.5 mm/rev feed is a demonstration condition and is not recommended for standard machining, but it makes the surface result particularly interesting🔍

700 m/min on gray cast iron? That’s where ceramics get interesting🔥

NTK’s HC1 and HW2 alumina ceramic grades are engineered for high-speed finish turning, combining thermal stability with two different performance priorities:
▪ HC1 — wear resistance for high-speed finishing
▪ HW2 — greater fracture resistance when extra toughness is needed
▪ Cutting speeds up to Vc ≈ 700 m/min
▪ Designed for dry machining

And the application results show the difference: HC1 achieved 2× tool life in gray cast iron brake discs, while HW2 delivered 2× tool life plus improved surface finish in chilled-iron cylinder liners.

Same ceramic family. Different strengths. The key is matching the grade to the cutting condition⚙️

9× the productivity — while maintaining finishing accuracy🎯

This Tungaloy NTK Success Report looks at VariableMeister with AH710 in finish machining of an automotive positioning component in S50C.

The difference came from pushing the machining parameters while maintaining precision:
▪ Ø10 mm cutter
▪ 7 cutting edges
▪ Vc = 150 m/min
▪ fz = 0.05 mm/tooth
▪ Vf = 1,671 mm/min
▪ ap = 15 mm

The result: 9× higher productivity compared with the conventional tooling setup, while maintaining the required finishing accuracy.

A good example of how the right combination of geometry, cutting edges and conditions can completely change a finishing process⚙️
