Scary Movie (Michael Tiddes, 2026)

‘Scary Movie’ is one of those films where, if you go in with suitably low expectations, you'll probably have a reasonably good time. There is certainly a nostalgic pleasure in seeing familiar faces return, including Anna Faris and Regina Hall, alongside the involvement of members of the Wayans brothers either in writing or acting capacities. It knows exactly what audiences are turning up for and rarely pretends to be anything more sophisticated than a broad, irreverent spoof....

Cabin at the Movies Saturday 13 June 2026

On this week's programme I was joined by Olivia Carter, a student in English Language & Linguistics at the University of Kent, to talk about some of her all-time favourite films. From the stylish action of Kingsman and the romance of Twilight and time-travelling in About Time to the hilarious comedy of Hot Fuzz and the recent thought-provoking The Drama, it’s a wonderfully varied celebration of cinema....

Disclosure Day (Steven Spielberg, 2026)

There are clear links here with ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, the first of Steven Spielberg’s great alien films, and with the conspiracy-driven sensibility that continued through ‘E.T.’ Yet ‘Disclosure Day’ lacks much of the mythical grandeur and childlike wonder that defined those earlier works. Instead, this is a film about the urge to expose the truth and prove that a cover-up has taken place....

Niagara (Henry Hathaway, 1953)

‘Niagara’ is very much a film noir, albeit one shot in glorious Technicolor, with the majesty and turbulence of the Niagara Falls providing the backdrop to this tangled murder story. It feels in many ways like a prototype for ‘Vertigo’. Indeed, there is even a bell tower sequence that anticipates Hitchcock's later masterpiece, with the ringing bells signalling an assumed death and functioning almost as a marker of murder rather than the actual site of the crime....

Madfabulous (Celyn Jones, 2026)

‘Madfabulous’ tells the remarkable true story of Henry Cyril Paget, the fifth Marquess of Anglesey, a Welsh aristocrat whose extravagant lifestyle and refusal to conform to Victorian expectations made him one of Britain's most fascinating eccentrics. Callum Scott Howells gives an engaging performance as Paget, a flamboyant aristocrat who spends his inheritance on lavish theatrical productions, dazzling costumes, jewellery, and his famous butterfly dances....

Enzo (Robin Campillo, 2025)

‘Enzo’ is a coming-of-age drama with some interesting observations about class, aspiration and the search for identity. It opens on a building site, where a disaffected sixteen-year-old is working alongside a group of Ukrainian labourers. He’s not particularly good at the job, and when the foreman demands to see his parents, we discover the central paradox of the film. Enzo (Eloy Pohu) comes from a wealthy family, lives in a spacious house with a swimming pool, and has opportunities many people would envy....

Cabin at the Movies Saturday 6 June 2026

This week on Cabin at the Movies, I was joined by listener Maximillian for an eclectic and entertaining journey through some of his favourite films. From the mischievous mayhem of Gremlins and the cult chaos of The Toxic Avenger to the poignancy of 84 Charing Cross Road, the suspense of Shallow Grave, the musical magic of Grease, the emotional power of Watership Down and the gentle charm of Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, it’s a celebration of cinema in all its variety. Plus, I look back at this week in film history, enjoying some great tunes, and discovering what’s showing at the cinema this week.

Tuner (Daniel Roher, 2025)

‘Tuner’ is a sharply edited, highly polished crime drama that feels like a throwback to the kind of intelligent adult thrillers Hollywood used to make in the 1970s. What elevates it beyond a straightforward caper film is its social conscience and the way it places disability at the centre of the story. Niki (Leo Woodall), has a rare hearing condition that gives him an extraordinary ability to distinguish individual notes on a piano, even when they are played simultaneously....
