An interesting interview with Dr Holly Smith, the author of Up in the Air: A History of High-Rise Britain. (1h42-1h48.)
Her comments about how they found cigarette packets and even tins of Spam packed into joints of the infamous Ronan Point tower block were mind-boggling. We agree that there are still many System Built blocks in need of urgent repair, but we would add that shoddy repairs can be as bad as no repairs.
Some structural repair contractors will offer cheaper quotes because they do not follow the guidelines provided by the British Standards Institution and the Building Research Establishment Specification Digest. Failure to comply with these guidelines can seriously impact the structural integrity of a building, especially mid and high-rise blocks.
