ESOS non-compliance penalties ⤴️

The deadline for compliance with ESOS Phase 3 has passed, but if you believe you may qualify, you may need to submit a late notification. Failure to comply could result in a penalty charge. A penalty will be imposed for each separate breach of these ESOS Regulations.

The list of non-compliant organisations will be published on the government website.

The UK has ceased all electricity production from burning coal, marking the end of its 142-year reliance on this fossil fuel. The country’s last coal power station, located at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, has finished operations after running since 1967.

This milestone represents a significant step in the UK’s efforts to reduce its contribution to climate change. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel, producing the highest levels of greenhouse gases when burned. The UK was the birthplace of coal power, and now it becomes the first major economy to abandon it.

From 1882 through the first half of the twentieth century, coal provided nearly all the UK’s electricity, powering homes and businesses. In the early 1990s, coal began to be phased out of the electricity mix in favour of gas, but it remained a crucial component of the UK grid for the following two decades. As recently as 2012, coal still generated 39% of the UK’s power.

In 2010, renewables accounted for just 7% of the UK’s energy generation. By the first half of 2024, this figure had surged to over 50%, setting a new record. The rapid growth of renewables has been so successful that the target date for phasing out coal power was moved forward by a year, leading to the closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar.

➡️ What is SECR?

SECR stands for Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting. The scheme, introduced in April 2019, requires qualifying organisations to disclose their energy usage and carbon emissions in their annual financial accounts.

➡️ Do you Qualify?

An organisation qualifies for the SECR scheme if it meets two of the following criteria.

Financial Turnover of £36 million or more
Balance Sheet Total of £18 million or more
Number of employees of 250 or more

➡️ What Needs to be Reported?

The information that needs to be reported varies depending on whether your organisation is a quoted or unquoted company. The minimum reporting disclosures for SECR for unquoted organisations are as follows:

Activities for which the organisation is responsible, involving the combustion of gas or the consumption of fuel for transport purposes.
The purchase of electricity by the organisation for its own use, including for transport purposes.
The report must disclose current and prior year figures in annual quantities, as outlined above, in kWh and tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e).

A narrative description of measures undertaken to increase energy efficiency during the relevant financial year must also be included.
The report must express the organisations emissions using at least one intensity ratio. Intensity ratios compare emissions data with an appropriate business metric or financial indicator, such as sales revenue or square meters of floor space. (Continued⤵️)

We are excited to continue our relationship with Risedale Nursing Homes, supporting their commitment to sustainability through our Retained Energy Management Services. Established in 1987, Risedale operates care homes across four sites within the Furness Peninsula.

Risedale understands the importance of sustainability, and since completing ESOS Phase 3, they are dedicated to advancing their journey toward net-zero targets. As part of Energy Impact’s Retained Energy Management Service, we will support Risedale with the following:

✔️ Completing ESOS Phase 4.

✔️ Implementing their ongoing Action Plan, which focuses on energy-saving measures, scheduled implementation, and estimated savings.

✔️ Regularly reviewing progress reports, which will be documented through the ESOS portal alongside the submission of their Action Plan.

✔️ Exploring the voluntary submission of their carbon footprint.

✔️ Analysing data collected from gas and electricity meters at each site.

✔️ Assisting Risedale with incorporating renewable energy into their business.

✔️ Conducting ongoing benchmarking exercises to assess energy performance levels.

Risedale Nursing Homes has been assigned a member of Energy Impact’s experienced team, who will be available to answer any questions related to the ongoing Action Plans, data monitoring, energy procurement, corporate carbon footprint assessments, project management, and all inquiries related to energy and carbon emissions.

WHAT DOES ‘NET-ZERO’ MEAN? ♻️

Net zero means no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. CO2 is released when oil, gas and coal are burned in homes, factories and to power transport. Methane is produced through farming and landfill.

Meanwhile, rapid deforestation across the world means there are fewer trees to absorb CO2.
CO2 emissions need to fall by nearly half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050, according to the UN’s climate body, the IPCC. But these emissions remain at record highs, external.

WOULD NET-ZERO MEAN A COMPLETE END TO GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS? 🌎

Not all emissions can be reduced to zero, so those that remain need to be matched by actively removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Natural removal methods include planting trees and restoring peatlands.

There are also human-made machines - at very early stages - which are capable of removing CO2 directly out of the air. Carbon capture is a related technology, where CO2 produced in power stations or other industrial processes is captured before it is released into the atmosphere, and stored underground.
While these technologies could be important in future, they are expensive, and can currently only cancel out a very small fraction of greenhouse gas emissions produced.
