The Day the Mountain Cried.
The morning broke on Aberfan,
The mist lay on the hill,
The children walked to school that day,
The village calm and still.
With polished shoes and smiling faces,
Their laughter filled the air,
Not knowing that the mountain held
A sorrow waiting there.
The classroom doors were opened wide,
Their books upon each desk,
A teacher smiled, the lessons began,
A morning like the rest.
But high above, the mountain stirred,
The coal waste slipped and fell,
And down it came, a deadly wave,
With stories none could tell.
The village shook, the daylight dimmed,
The school was swept away,
And childhood dreams were buried deep
Upon that dreadful day.
The mothers ran, the fathers dug,
With bleeding hands and tears,
They called the names of little ones,
Their cries would echo years.
A hundred and sixteen children,
Whose futures disappeared,
And twenty-eight more precious lives,
Forever loved and dear.
The school bells fell to silence,
The playground lost its song,
And Aberfan was left to ask
How things could go so wrong.
For this was not the hand of fate,
Nor nature's cruel decree,
But warnings left unanswered,
And a tragedy that need not be.
Yet through the grief, the village stood,
Though hearts were torn apart,
And every child who went that day
Lives on in Cymru's heart.
So when October comes again,
And autumn clouds hang low,
Remember all those little souls
Who had no chance to grow.
And let the valleys whisper names,
Let every hillside hear,
The children of dear Aberfan
Will never disappear.
Aberfan , we remeber you✨💖🏴
