⚡ Our Twyn Hywel Energy Park in Caerphilly has taken a big step forward as we're pleased to announce our partnership with civil engineering firm Knights Brown to deliver key infrastructure for the project.

Once complete, the onshore wind energy park could generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of around 81,000 homes every year.

With 90% of the civil engineering contract expected to be spent with Welsh businesses, the project will help create local jobs, develop skills, and strengthen regional supply chains.

✔ Supporting 300+ jobs during construction
✔ Investing £108m with Welsh businesses
✔ Creating a community benefit fund worth up to £704,000 each year

It’s part of a wider effort to build energy security, deliver home-grown clean energy while supporting local jobs and communities across South Wales.

A big diolch yn fawr goes to St David's Hospice Care and The DPJ Foundation for allowing us to support their work over the past three years.

As our partnership comes to a close, we'd also like to thank everyone - colleagues, contractors and partners who have helped us raise over £25,000 for these two great causes. We've learnt so much from the experience, and a relationship we'll continue to nurture for a long time beyond the official partnership.

We'll share news on our new partners soon, but for now - please take the time to learn more about these two great charities via our website: https://bute.energy/welsh-charities-week-2026/

📌 News - Our energy park in Caerphilly has been awarded a Contract for Difference by UK Government in its latest allocation round for renewable energy projects.

Given the green light by Welsh Ministers in November 2024, Twyn Hywel Energy Park will sit on the border of Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf in South East Wales. It will be able to generate clean, green energy by late 2027 and will support hosting communities with an annual grant fund of over £700,000 every year. 25% of which will be allocated to local energy projects owned by the community.

❓ What does this mean for people in Caerphilly?
The UK’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme is the government’s main way of supporting new low‑carbon electricity generation. Each year, renewable energy projects compete in a national auction – called an Allocation Round – for long‑term contracts that guarantee a stable price for the electricity they produce. This reduces financial risk, encourages investment, and accelerates the shift to home‑grown clean power.

For people in Caerphilly and the surrounding areas near the Twyn Hywel Energy Park, this means that we have even more certainty, confidence and security in the long-term investment for the energy park – giving us the ‘green light’ to push forward with our support for the community.

The renewable energy industry are expecting the results of the latest allocation round this month - designed to keep energy prices steady and give confidence in investment in renewables.

But what are Allocation Rounds? What are Contracts for Difference? And what actual difference does it make to the public?

Read Renewable UK's guide:

Annual clean power auctions, known as Allocation Rounds, are the primary way the Government unlocks investment in new offshore and onshore wind, solar and tidal energy projects. Successful projects are awarded ‘Contracts for Difference’ (CfDs) to generate clean power.

📌Project update

We have submitted planning applications for our third and fourth energy parks from our portfolio.

We began our journey with Banc Du and Rhiwlas Energy Parks back in late 2022 when we opened a public informal (non-statutory) consultation. A formal (statutory) consultation was then held last year - which led us to make some changes to the designs, including:

📍Banc Du Energy Park:
- Turbine 1 has been reduced in tip height of from 200m to 180m to reduce residential visual amenity (RVA) impacts; and
- Turbine 6 and the associated crane pad have been moved east to avoid a bat buffer area and a heritage asset.

📍Rhiwlas Energy Park:
- Turbine 13 has been removed to avoid potential RVA impacts as well as bat and woodland buffer zones;
- Turbine 3 has been relocated to reduce potential RVA impacts;
- The access track to Turbine 3 has been realigned to avoid an area of peaty soil;
- The access track to Turbine 7 has been realigned to avoid a heritage asset; and
- Turbine 12 has been re-sited to improve the overall spacing between proposed turbines.

We're behind Nant Mithil Energy Park - in that PEDW is currently reviewing the applications to ensure all required information has been submitted.

Once accepted, the documents will be available to view on the PEDW Casework Portal, and a five-week consultation which will be led by PEDW. This will be your final opportunity to give your views on the proposals.

Your efforts to engage with us throughout the process is much appreciated, we hope to bring you more updates soon.

Banc Du and Rhiwlas Energy Park applications have been submitted to Planning and Environment Decisions Wales..
