Day 7. Prepare the top and bottom trim to house the triple doors. They are constructed from American Black Walnut. The bulk of the construction is veneered MDF with a solid Walnut lipping. Today is about milling the stock. A late addition to the design is a 12mm solid oak lipping to the front face of the carcass, it adds a more substantial finish behind the doors. All the walnut is milled to 19mm and the remaining MDF is run through the thicknesser to achieve the 19mm to match the lipping.

Day 6 and 7 of the build. The focus on day 6 is to dress the back of the cabinet and strengthen the carcass so when fixed to the wall, the carcass can take the weight of crockery and glass without the carcass felexing or streeing any joint. Although the carcass is held together with my prefered Domino construction it does not hurt to add strength where it is most needed.

The trenches for the corbels are cut on the outside face of the side cheeks. These will house stub tennons on the corbels. Once cut assembly of the carcass can take place. The backboard will require cleaning up with a block plane. The dominos are glued in place for the centre dividers, then one side cheek is glued and clamped in place. All glue on the joints is cleaned up to prevent staining. The other side cheek will be added tomorrow.

Day 3 of the China Hutch build. Back onto preparing the carcass. Domino's allow a strong joint to be created to a high tolerance. The holes are drilled to accept the shelf pins. I am thinking of adding another set of holes 20mm below the ones shown to allow for a fine adjustment of the pitch of the shelf. Also to add Walnut corbels to the outside face of the sides, more for decoration than strength.

12mm plywood packers cut to strengthen the rear of the carcass/improve fixing back to wall.

Day 2 of the China Hutch build. Time to concentrate on the internal divider walls and shelves. All White Oak veneered MDF cut to size on the Festool CMS saw and then edged and trimmed. Again iron on edging trimmed with the Festool trimmer.

24-07-11 Day 1 of the Arts and Crafts inspired china hutch. Carcass in American White Oak, trims in American Black Walnut. I get good results using veneered MDF with iron on edging, of course using my trusty Festool laminate trimmer.

Triple doors in solid white oak with stick and style constructions with "Y" shaped panels of coloured glass.
