It's Clean Air Day - the UK's largest public air pollution campaign!

The campaign engages businesses, schools, hospitals, health professionals, local authorities and devolved governments to take action on air pollution. We think there's room for our industry to get involved, too.

Everyone in the events and structures industries knows how much our work relies on travel. Haulage. Deliveries. Heavy-duty operations.

At Roder, this is our everyday reality. Travelling to sites, deliveries across the country, or even internationally, running machinery at our offices to keep PVC clean. There's a lot.

In the UK, road emissions is one of our biggest polluters. According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, domestic transport accounts for 29.1% of all territorial greenhouse gas emissions, the main source of which is petrol and diesel in road vehicles.

We've tried for years to find ways to minimise our impact on the planet, while still delivering our essential functions. And we think we've found some great solutions:

→ We invested in an all-electric vehicle fleet, and now collaborate with all-electric haulage companies to further minimise emissions wherever possible.
→ Our offices have been kitted out with solar panels which now power 100% of our equipment and office running.
→ In upgrading a large piece of on-site equipment, a washing machine for PVC covers, we have created a system with improved time efficiency, and reduced our water wastage and carbon output in the process

While we haven't completely erased our carbon emissions, we're making steps in the right direction. In 2025, just the switch to an EV fleet saved approximately 11,792kg, while Lee Dalton's switch to an electric vehicle over three years ago has saved over 23,638 kg of CO2 in total.

We have plans to expand our use of EV haulage over the coming years, too, and would love to hear from other suppliers who are trialing similar initiatives!

If you're hiring in extra space on a regular basis, you might be missing a key opportunity...

For lots of businesses, renting temporary structures to supplement their available space is an essential part of their annual calendar. For functions, gatherings or even an extra revenue stream, the ability to quickly and flexibly scale your space up and down when needed is very valuable.

But what many businesses forget is that you can turn this extra space from an expense into an asset.

If you hire a temporary structure more than ten times, you will have likely paid more in rental fees than it would have cost to buy the structure outright. If there's one thing we know about British weather, it's that 'summer' doesn't necessarily mean 'sun'.

Just last weekend, the final day of the Royal Cornwall Show was forced to cancel due to a yellow weather warning predicting winds up to 45-55mph. It's a huge blow to the local community, the organisers, and of course to the suppliers and traders who have lost huge amounts in revenue. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected.

Many of us will remember similar scenes at Leeds festival 2024, which was hit by the 75mph winds of Lilian. Tents lost, stages damaged, and last minute closures during the highest winds leading to lost revenue for many traders.

Safe to say, strong winds are a bit of a nightmare.

When so many events rely on temporary structures for essential site infrastructure, high winds pose a serious problem. Not only can structures be damaged, but if not handled correctly, these situations can quickly become dangerous.

The not-so-secret ingredient to our sustainable operations? Solar power! ☀️

Welcome back to our series to mark World Environment Day, where we're sharing daily bits, bobs and behind the scenes insights about how we keep things sustainable at Roder UK. Today, we're talking solar.

We have been using solar for many years now, building up from a hybrid solution. Our offices have now been kitted out with solar panels which power 100% of our equipment and office running.

People often have mixed feeling about solar, but we believe it's the best option available. While nuclear power offers long-term stability, solar energy leads the way in speed, affordability, and accessibility. It's also well established, offering an accessible option for many people and businesses.

Global solar energy capacity has skyrocketed over the last decade:
→ 228 gigawatts in 2015, roughly 1% of the world's electricity
→ 759 GW in 2020, around 3% of global electricity demand
→ 2,919 GW in 2025, now providing around 10% of the world's electricity

If growth continues at current rates, solar could be powering more than 20% of the world's energy demand.

For us, it saves money, improves efficiency, and means we can run extensive machinery, like our PVC washing machines, consciously.

Did you know that 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in active use today thanks to recycling? ♻️

This week, to mark World Environment Day, we're sharing top tips and tidbits about our sustainable practices at Roder UK. And recycling is a big one!

When correctly treated and disposed of, both aluminium and PVC can be recycled with great efficiency. As these materials make up a huge percentage of the waste products from our industry, these recycling processes are essential if we want to achieve a circular industry.

Aluminium recycling is highly efficient - it requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium and emits 97% fewer greenhouse gases. It's also infinitely recyclable: Aluminium can be melted and reused continuously without any loss of quality.

This is something you can get involved with at home, not just at work. An empty drinks can put in a recycling bin can be processed, remanufactured, and back on a store shelf in as little as 60 days!

PVC recycling is a little more complex, but still very possible! The recycling process involves specialised separation, shredding, and melting. Because PVC contains heavy additives and can release chemicals during high heat, professional facilities are required.

Some fantastic waste management specialists, like PVCR and Acorn Waste, offer PVC recycling for commercial quantities. As PVC can release harmful chemicals when it is melted down, which can be detrimental to the environment and human health, it is especially important that you are disposing of it correctly.

For event suppliers, we would also recommend checking our Rubbish Ideas' waste management initiatives as a way to monitor and reduce your onsite waste, and review the whole lifecycle of your products.

Hot take: you can't claim to be sustainable if your products don't stand the test of time...

If you've not seen us before, we're Roder. Sustainable suppliers and manufacturers of temporary and semi-permanent structures. To mark World Environment Day, we're sharing a pillar of our sustainability efforts every day this week. And today, we're talking about longevity.

Initiatives, schemes and eco-friendly swaps are great, but if your product is constantly needing to be replaced or disposed of, you may be doing more harm than you think.

Waste from temporary structures contributes heavily to the construction waste stream. Debris and waste materials often end up in landfill. But this can be minimised through conscious planning.

One of the main ways Roder remains sustainable is through the longevity of our products. When our structures and materials endure for many years, we save money for our clients and save unnecessary waste. Some of our longest-standing structures include:

→ Cambridge Motorboat Club - we installed a 6m x 12m structure in 2012 to extend the use of their existing members room

→ Llanerch Vineyard - back in 2014 we installed a 9m x 33m P-Tent for a permanent event venue, which is still in use 12 years later

→ Bedford Blues Rugby Club - the CMC marquee, a permanent venue install which has been now been operational for over 20 years!

The quality and longevity of our products is something we take great pride in, not only because it means a better experience for our clients, but because it's a crucial part of our sustainability commitment. Quality comes first, always.

Last Friday was World Environment Day, the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment 🌍

To mark the occasion, everyday this week we'll be sharing some tips, tricks, insights and inner-workings of Roder's sustainable history and initiatives. And where better to start than the beginning?

In 2007, Germany agreed to end all hard coal mining operations. Our owners, RAG Stiftung, have been heavily involved in repairing and maintaining the environment in Germany's old mining regions, Ruhr and Saar. As a result, Roder was acquired in 2015 as part of a long term strategy to help fund these environmental efforts and reduce the strain on the public sector. Our very roots are in sustainability!

Being part of a wider organisation that has such a core focus on undoing the damage caused by previous mining activities and improving the environment in those areas creates a very natural synergy with the sustainable focus that Roder Group has always had.

And RAG Stiftung's contributions to the former mining areas continue to this day, including:
→ Pit water management
→ Polder measures
→ Ground water purification in former mining regions

Does your business need fast-deploying, cost-effective extra space?

We were recently approached by a fast-growing Cambridgeshire business who had found themselves in need of extra industrial space, and fast.

Luckily, Roder was able to support. We quickly installed over 2,000sqm of fully-insulated temporary structure to provide this much-needed additional space.

We installed:
→ A 25m x 50m from our M-Line range. This was fully insulated with thermal inflated roofs, 40mm ISO walls and insulated roller shutter doors
→ A 25m x 30m M-Line with single skin PVC roof covers and steel clad walling

Both structures have an eave height of 5.2m, and are now operating as fully-functioning industrial buildings which can be scaled up and down in accordance with their needs.
