A big thank you to WEG for hosting their 2026 Golf Day, attended by Rotamec’s Paul Pearce and Darryl Beecham.

The Priory Course was in superb condition, the weather delivered, and to top off a great day, Paul and Darryl came away as winners of the Chris Cooke Memorial Trophy! 🏆

Their win means they’ll now progress to the Grand Final in Marbella, Spain, where they’ll take to the course at the fantastic La Cala Golf Resort.

There was another result to celebrate too, with Paul also winning Nearest the Pin. 🎯

Major Bearing Change – 3 Metre Marble Stone Cutting Machine 🏗️⚙️

A great example of our GEM engineers working alongside multiple specialist teams to deliver a challenging on-site engineering project safely and successfully.

GEM was tasked with carrying out a bearing change on a 3-metre marble stone cutting machine. Due to the sheer size of the equipment, the job required careful coordination between our engineers, the customer’s scaffolding and roofing teams, the lifting contractor and the site health & safety team.

The machine was safely dismantled, including the removal of the 3-metre cutting blade and shaft assembly, with craneage required to lift the major components through the opened roof.

Once removed, the shaft was transported back to our workshop where our engineers carried out a full bearing change, before returning to site for reinstallation and reassembly of the machine.

Safety and communication were critical throughout. Where challenges arose, the team stopped work, reassessed the situation and agreed the safest method before continuing.

It was also a valuable opportunity for one of our apprentices to gain experience on a substantial real-world engineering project, working alongside experienced engineers and specialist contractors.

A big thank you to everyone involved, and particularly to our GEM team for representing the business so professionally on site!

We have a significant addition to our Cheddar workshop with a new varnish tank and varnish system, further strengthening our in-house motor rewind capabilities.

The new equipment gives our engineering team the capacity to handle high-quality varnish treatment across a wide range of motor sizes, supporting everything from smaller routine rewinds through to much larger electrical machines.

Varnish treatment is a critical part of the rewind process, helping to protect and secure the windings while improving resistance to vibration, moisture and contamination.

This investment is about more than adding another piece of equipment to the workshop. It’s about continuing to develop the facilities, capacity and processes at the Rotamec Group so we can maintain a consistently high standard of workmanship, whatever the size of the motor.

Emergency gearbox turnaround ⚙️🚨

When downtime is costing production, sometimes the solution isn’t waiting weeks for new parts — it’s making the best use of what’s available.

We received two split-case gearboxes with the requirement to produce one serviceable unit from the two, with turnaround time critical for the customer.
Both units were fully stripped and assessed, allowing our engineers to identify the best serviceable components from each gearbox and build them into one reliable unit.

The job included:
🔧Full strip-down and inspection of both gearboxes
🔧Selection of the best serviceable gears, shafts and components
🔧Complete bearing replacement
🔧Complete seal replacement
🔧Reassembly into one serviceable gearbox
🔧Final checks prior to return to the customer

The photos give a good look inside the gearbox — and also show the level of damage found on one of the gear components.

This is exactly where having in-house gearbox, machining and mechanical engineering capability comes into its own. Rather than telling the customer they need to wait for a replacement, we can look at the assets available and find a practical engineering solution to get production moving again.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers!

Last week, Rotamec proudly attended the What's Next Careers Event at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare alongside industry leaders including Airbus, Thatchers, Bristol Port Company and Hinkley Point C.

Representing Rotamec were Paul Korb and Andrei, one of our Cheddar-based apprentices, who spent the day speaking with students and parents about engineering careers, apprenticeships, and the exciting opportunities available within our industry.

A huge thank you to Weston College for organising such a successful event. It was fantastic to see so many young people showing an interest in engineering and exploring the possibilities for their future careers.

ABB DC Motor Overhaul – Back to Full Working Order!

Another overhaul completed by the team at CovElec — this time on an ABB DC motor, requiring attention across both the electrical and mechanical sides of the machine.

The unit was fully dismantled, cleaned and inspected before our engineers carried out a comprehensive repair programme, including:

⚙️ Machining the commutator and recessing the micas
🔧 Repairing the worn bearing housing
⚡ Overhauling the armature windings
⚡ Overhauling the field windings
🛠️ Overhauling the brush gear assembly
🔄 Final skim of the commutator
❄️ Supplying and fitting a new cooling motor
🔩 Supplying and fitting new bearings
🧑‍🏭 Repairing the damaged foot casting
✅ Complete reassembly and testing

Having mechanical, electrical, winding and machining capabilities under one roof makes such a difference. Rather than addressing one individual fault, we can assess the complete machine and carry out the work required to return it to a reliable operating condition.

CovElec is also an approved ABB distributor, giving our customers access to ABB products alongside our in-house repair, rewind and overhaul capabilities.

Another cracking transformation through the Covelec workshop!

This geared hub from the food industry came into us heavily contaminated and showing the signs you’d expect from a hard-working piece of production equipment.

Our engineers carried out a full strip-down and overhaul, inspecting the gearing, bearings and associated components before cleaning, repairing and rebuilding the assembly ready to go back into service.

The before-and-after photos tell the story nicely.

Emergency machining turnaround 🔧

A nice example of problem solving under pressure from the team at our Cheddar HQ.

This roller came in as an emergency machining job, with downtime being the customer’s biggest concern. Rather than simply repairing it back to its original arrangement, we looked at how we could modify the design to make future maintenance quicker and easier.

The existing shaft was turned down and the roller was redesigned to incorporate removable stub ends. This means that when the bearings need changing in future, the complete roller won’t need to be removed from the machine — the stub ends can be removed independently while the main roller remains in position.

From the initial component through to CAD design, machining, modification and final assembly, the work was completed at our Cheddar facility.

The immediate objective was to get the customer back up and running quickly. The added value was engineering out a source of future downtime.

Repair it. Improve it. Keep production moving.
