Another day in the life of a structural engineer! 🏗️

Today, we’re in London inspecting office premises ahead of some structural alterations, supporting the main contractor to ensure the works can progress safely, efficiently and as planned.

At SCB Structures, we work closely with contractors on site to address structural challenges and find practical solutions when they matter most.

RFI resolved. Construction back on track. ✅

A Request for Information (RFI) is often raised when a contractor encounters something unexpected on site and needs clarification from the structural engineer before proceeding.

Today, on one of our loft conversion projects, the contractor uncovered an unexpected issue while preparing to install the new loft floor.

We acted promptly, arranged a site visit for the following day, and one of our engineers inspected the roof structure to establish the appropriate solution.

By the end of the day, the RFI was resolved.

The result? The contractor could continue working, the client had clarity, and the project avoided unnecessary delays.

At SCB Structures, we understand that responsive structural engineering is not just about getting the calculations right. It’s also about solving problems efficiently, supporting contractors on site and helping keep projects on programme and within budget.

Another loft inspection and internal alteration project.

Today we’re reviewing the works already started on site, identifying areas where things have gone wrong, and helping the builder put them right before the project progresses further.

Early structural input can make a big difference — solving problems on site before they become bigger, more expensive issues.

Great progress on site for one of our latest SCB Structures projects — an exciting industrial development taking shape.

Building No. 3 is now well underway, and we’re really looking forward to seeing the next stage of construction and the next building coming up.

Today we carried out a site inspection at a new industrial development to assess the structural capacity of the existing floor.

Our client is looking to introduce a specialist storage area and a new mezzanine floor to support the expansion of their business.

Before any new loads are introduced, it’s essential to understand what the existing structure can safely support and identify the most appropriate structural solution.

Another interesting project for SCB Structures, helping businesses make the most of their existing space. 🏗️

A clear example of subsidence caused by ground movement.

SCB Structures has been appointed to carry out an intrusive inspection and structural assessment to investigate and help rectify the damage affecting this block of six flats.

The movement is associated with the combined effects of clay soil, trees and periods of dry weather, which can cause clay soils to shrink and result in foundation movement.

This is why it is so important to design and construct foundations in accordance with the NHBC recommendations for buildings near trees, particularly on shrinkable clay soils.

🌳 Trees + clay soil + inadequate foundation depth = potential risk of movement.

At SCB, we assess the cause of the movement before recommending the appropriate structural solution.

🌳 EXTENDING YOUR HOUSE? DON’T IGNORE THE VEGETATION.

When designing an extension, trees and large shrubs around your property can have a major influence on foundation design.

Roots can affect the moisture content of shrinkable clay soils, potentially causing ground movement and foundation movement.

That’s why at SCB Structures, one of the first things we look at during a structural survey is the surrounding vegetation — not just what’s in your garden, but what’s nearby.

Identifying these factors early can help determine the appropriate foundation depth and avoid costly problems later.

🌳 Building an extension? Don’t overlook nearby trees and vegetation.

Under NHBC Chapter 4.2, foundations need to be designed to a sufficient depth to minimise the risk of movement caused by nearby vegetation and changing soil conditions.

That’s why, at SCB Structures, when we carry out a structural assessment and there’s no Arboricoltural Report available, one of the first things we do is assess the surrounding vegetation—typically within around 30–40 metres of the proposed extension.

Getting this wrong can lead to foundation movement, cracking and potentially expensive remedial works. It can also create complications with your building insurance claim.
