Here's the benefit of air conditioning that hardly anyone talks about. Hay fever.

Every summer people think air conditioning is about staying cool. One of the biggest advantages is that you can keep the windows shut, which means you're not constantly letting pollen drift into the house all day long.

At the same time the system is circulating air through its filters, which helps catch things like dust, pollen and pet hair.

Let's be sensible about it. An air conditioning system isn't a medical device and it's not a replacement for an air purifier. But a lot of people who suffer with hay fever tell us they feel far more comfortable indoors when it's running, and honestly, it makes sense. Less pollen coming in through the windows, filtered air moving around the room, and a comfortable temperature as well.

The only thing we'd say is keep the filters clean. A clean filter helps. A dirty one doesn't.

If you suffer with hay fever, we'd be interested to know whether you've noticed a difference. Let us know in the comments.

Three things nobody tells you before you buy air conditioning.

One. The brand matters less than people think. Everyone gets obsessed with which manufacturer to choose. What matters just as much is where the outdoor unit is going to go and how the whole system is designed. A great unit fitted badly is still a bad installation.

Two. Bigger isn't always better. People assume the biggest unit gives the best results. If it's too big for the room it'll constantly switch on and off and never run efficiently. The right size is always better than the biggest size.

Three. It's nowhere near as disruptive as people imagine. People picture walls being ripped apart and the house looking like a building site. For a typical single room installation we're usually in and out within a day. One neat hole through the wall, we tidy up after ourselves, and you're done.

Those are the three biggest misconceptions we see, and they're often the reason people put it off for years.

Got questions about air conditioning? Drop them below and we'll do our best to answer them.

"My husband sets the air con to 16 degrees because he thinks it'll cool the room quicker."

We hear this one a lot, and it doesn't work like that.

Your air conditioning is already working as hard as it can the moment you switch it on. That number isn't a speed setting. It's the temperature you want the room to end up at.

Set it to 16 and all you're doing is telling the system to keep running long after the room is already comfortable.

For most people somewhere around 18 to 21 degrees is absolutely fine. Cool enough to be comfortable without turning the room into a fridge, and it'll usually be cheaper to run too.

The goal isn't to make the room freezing. It's to make it comfortable.

If you've got someone in your house setting it to 16 every time, send them this. It might save you a few quid.

A lot of companies finish a job and you never hear from them again.

We come back. A week after every install we do a follow-up to make sure everything's running the way it should.

Today: back in Chelmsford. The new Worcester Bosch 4000 30kW combi we put in last week, replacing a 25-year-old floor-standing boiler that was well overdue.

New boiler on the wall. Pipework redone. Loads more cupboard space. Customer happy.

Done right first time.

This one's interesting, because it isn't completely wrong.

People tell us air conditioning dries the air out. The honest answer is, a little bit.

When a system is cooling a room it removes some of the moisture from the air. That's the water you see dripping out of the drain outside. It's taking humidity out of the room.

For most people that's actually a good thing. That sticky, muggy feeling you get on hot summer days is humidity, and taking some of it out makes the room feel far more comfortable.

Where people get confused is thinking air conditioning is a dehumidifier. It removes some moisture as part of the cooling process, but if you've got a genuine damp problem you'll still need a proper dehumidifier. Different job, different machine.

So does air conditioning take moisture out of the room? Yes. Does it dry your house out? No. That's the difference.

Air con gives you colds. It's one of the myths we hear most, and it isn't true.

A cold is a virus. Your air conditioning isn't a virus.

There's a reason people say it though. If a unit hasn't been cleaned or serviced properly, the filters get dirty and start blowing dust around the room. That's not the air conditioning making you ill, that's poor maintenance.

The other one is setting the temperature ridiculously low, sitting under it all day, then wondering why you've got a dry throat. Set it to something sensible and use it properly and it's absolutely fine.

A clean, serviced system is actually filtering the air as it runs.

So air con doesn't give you colds. A dirty system might irritate your sinuses. Big difference. Keep the filters clean and get it serviced regularly.
