We’re so thrilled that Design Decoded and Millar + Howard Workshop's project which we worked on has won 🏆 Best Extension in The Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovating Homebuilding Home of the Year awards 2021🏆 It’s wonderful recognition for a beautiful, superbly thought out modern extension that works so well with the original house dating from the 1700s. Big congratulations to all involved 🍾

This bathroom from a recently finished project looks like the perfect place to relax after a long day… 🛀 Very simple but elevated by texture and a little colour.

Managed to capture the late summer glory of this incredible garden before we hit rainy September🌸🌼🌺 As we’ve said before, we LOVE landscaping but we only do it as part of a build project. Here we really got to use our garden design mojo on this old Cotswold farmhouse, which we completely renovated and added a zinc roofed kitchen extension and garden office. The garden features a shaded outdoor deck, an eating area on a formal terrace with water feature, a covered relaxed seating area with outdoor fireplace and hot tub, a kitchen garden with raised beds, greenhouse and cutting garden, and a passionflower-covered arched walkway.

We do interiors too! We love working with homeowners on the inside details to get everything done exactly as they want it. Here our client had very specific ideas for the library shelving, and they worked closely with our carpenter to make sure their books and artwork fitted perfectly.

This house is nestled in a beautiful village in the middle of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s clearly modern, but it sits gently in amongst the surrounding houses. From the outside you wouldn’t necessarily know it’s a super low energy home, but the walls are thick with a lot of insulation, the windows are triple glazed, and the verandah and wooden-clad projection around the picture window provide important shading in the summer months, without which the house would overheat.☀️🔥

The open corner with the sliding doors and the flush thresholds means that the inside and outside appear seamless, and the transition between the two is softened further by the verandah which wraps around the kitchen. The open corner details took time to get perfect - the cladding, the plywood blind boxes, the flush threshold - but when done right they look👌

(We really enjoyed designing this garden 🌳🌱- we don’t really do landscaping unless it’s part of a build, but we always love it when we get to do one!)

Slightly away from the chocolate box centre of the village, the house is surrounded by a real mix of house types, from classical Georgian symmetry to 1960s Bradstone. But the choice of materials is totally in keeping with its location and makes it look like it’s been here for more than 6 months: Cotswold stone (with our brushed lime mortar), pale lime render and natural slate.

Here’s an absolutely perfect example of inside-outside living. This family home designed by has a large open space for cooking, dining and entertaining, with two lots of sliding doors that open onto the South facing garden. One set of the doors opens on a corner, with the most gorgeous view onto green hills beyond. A verandah wraps around the kitchen, slightly softening the transition between the inside and the outside when the doors are open, as well as giving the children somewhere to play when it’s (rather inevitably) raining☔️

Inside, despite being a largely open plan space there are also little pockets where people can have some quiet time in the midst of family life, with the sitting area looking onto the garden and the separate Snug where the children’s toys can live out of sight🙈

It’s not just the garden and the kitchen that’s green... This is a super insulated, airtight home with a fresh air ventilation system. The verandah provides some shading to ensure the space doesn’t get too hot when the sun shines. There’s nothing complicated about this house, but it is cheap to run and cosy to live in. An awesome recent project! 💚

Here’s an extension and glazed link we added to a period property situated in a Cotswolds village. It provides the ‘inside outside’ living that we all want but that older houses can rarely offer.👌The consistent use of traditional limestone, but in a varied number of textures, from ashlar to honed to dry stone, means it looks modern yet sits perfectly in its village surroundings.

This is the contemporary Learning Pavilion at the Walled Garden 🌸🌼🌺, part of The Museum in the Park in Stroud, built in 2015 as a space for events and classes. Externally, one of the most striking things about it is the use of zinc cladding in two colourways (gold and copper oxide) which sits so well in the colours and textures of the garden. It also has a sedum green roof🌱 and photovoltaic solar panels🌞 although these aren’t particularly noticeable features from the ground.

Inside, the glazing slides back fully, allowing a panoramic opening onto the garden and a totally seamless connection between the inside and outside.

We absolutely loved working on this project! The walled garden is part of The Museum in the Park, and it’s a beautifully tended and free public garden for all to enjoy🌷🌻🌹 (and it will be open again from 1st May 👍)

The lighting design in the garden was meticulously planned and executed, and does the garden justice even in the dark.🌒 Good lighting makes sure the space can still be used (everyone can see the French limestone pathways and steps perfectly), and creates little pockets of interest that in daylight is provided by the planting. A truly stunning space✨
