We are all totally devastated to hear of the sudden passing of our friend and electrical subcontractor Aran Sadler in a bike race on Saturday. Aran was a lovely lad who has worked for us since he was an electrical apprentice, a very familiar face both in the office and on our sites. He was professional and very pleasant company, a real team player, and of course everyone knew how much he loved his bikes and the adventures they took him on. We'll never forget Aran - we're surrounded by reminders here in the form of his electrical work - but he'll be especially remembered for his big smile, hard work and sweet and calm personality. Sending deepest condolences from everyone at McCarrick Construction to his fiancé and his whole family.

Rest in peace Aran.

Fantastic photos here from St Oswald's Hospice of progress on their new Young Adults Accommodation, which we are very proud to have completed the construction of earlier this year. This unit will house young people who have high care needs but who are ready to live independently from their families as they reach adulthood. Well done to our project manager Gavin Cleverley and all the team here at McCarrick Construction, and big thanks to Stu Franklin at JDDK Architects and of course everyone at the Hospice for their creativity, expertise and patience. A stylish and meaningful project that we are honoured to have helped you create.

We've had lots of enquiries about apprenticeships starting September 2025 and we'd like to thank you for your interest but we're very sorry to say that this year we are not planning to take any new apprentices on.

This is partly due to last year's intake being of a very high standard, and partly because of the government's decision to vastly increase the cost to employers of taking new employees on, which sadly also applies to apprentices who are now very costly to train. We are involved in a campaign to ask Government to urgently adjust this to make it easier for us to take apprentices on, but as it stands this is not the case.

Hope we can post another apprentice recruitment ad in the future if this can be resolved, but in the mean time we wish the best of luck to everyone looking for apprenticeships this year.

Huge thank you to everyone on our team who pulled together to make our first ever Apprentice Skills Day such a success on Saturday, and to all of you on Facebook who shared our post advertising the event.

After a fantastic response and a really difficult selection process we invited three groups totalling 30 potential apprentices to our yard to try out their future trade.

To welcome each group, James Brown MCIOB MAPM, our Contracts Manager, delivered a presentation where he described what life in construction would be like and what would be expected of apprentices during their apprenticeship and beyond. As James explained, bricklaying and joinery are extremely skilled jobs which take years to master, involving maths and visual/creative skills, precision, physical stamina and a can-do attitude, but once you have learned a trade it's yours for life and it’s a great industry for the right person.

After a Site Safety Briefing and a very quick quiz, everyone put on their PPE ready to try out their chosen trade.

Ged and our recent Bricklaying Apprentice graduate Matty did an excellent job showing the future brickies how to lay a wall in both bricks and blocks. Ged has been bricklaying with us 50 years this year so is possibly the most experienced bricklayer in the North East - there is no better person to show our future apprentices the ropes.

In our Joiner's Workshop, our Foreman Joiner Colin and Joinery Apprentice Tanis demonstrated how a roof truss is put together and showed our future joiners how to measure the angles, using saws, clamps and machinery to cut the joints in and assemble the trusses.

Ged and Colin were both really impressed with the attitude and readiness to learn displayed by our apprentice hopefuls and it is going to be a difficult task deciding who to take on to the next step – a week of work experience this summer, with the best of those being offered an apprenticeship starting in September.

Many thanks to everyone including New College Durham and Gateshead College who shared our posts and especially to all those who made the effort to apply.

We're so pleased to be involved with this life-changing project for the young adults who use the services of St Oswald's Hospice in Gosforth. We're building a new accommodation block which has been specially commissioned to cater for young people who are fighting life-limiting illnesses, to help them safely transition to living more independently from their families as they reach adulthood, something most of us take for granted. Last week, the Hospice held a ground-breaking ceremony for everyone involved in the project at which our team was represented by Project Manager Gavin Cleverley MAPM, Group Commercial Director Keith Alderslade, and Contracts Director Tony Pearce, who met Edward, one of the future users of the development, and his family and spoke to the staff about their hopes for the project.

Keith explained why this project is especially motivating for our workforce. "One of the chief pleasures of working in construction is knowing that our work directly benefits the needs of our community, and nowhere is this more evident than in this fantastic project for St Oswald’s Hospice. Our team is highly experienced in exactly this kind of work, so we are primed and ready to go – and are already looking forward to seeing the positive impact that this accommodation will have on the young adults who will use it.”

APPRENTICE QUANTITY SURVEYOR
If you know someone leaving school this year who loves maths, who would enjoy a career that involves problem solving and project management, and has an interest in how our built environment develops around us, perhaps suggest that they consider Quantity Surveying. This is one of many great careers in construction that is interesting, well regarded and vital to our industry but isn't often mentioned as an option at school careers events. We are looking for someone like the description above to become our next Quantity Surveying Apprentice at McCarrick Construction. Please share with any relative or pupil you know who could be a good fit. CV and covering letter to [email protected].
