GRP has been in UK infrastructure since the 1970s. And the same five objections still come up in almost every sales conversation.

Let us deal with them.

'It costs too much.' Purchase price, yes. Whole-life cost over 25 years in a corrosive environment? The numbers usually say something different.

'It is not strong enough.' BS EN 13706 E23 grade. 23 GPa tensile modulus. Safety factor of 4.77 times public assembly loading on independently tested handrail systems. Strong enough.

'It only works in industrial environments.' GRP is specified in MRI suites, on pedestrian footbridges, at airports, and in commercial construction. The industrial-only assumption is about 20 years out of date.

'It is difficult to install.' Cut with a circular saw. No welding. No hot works permit. No specialist fittings. GRP scaffold tubes connect to standard steel couplers with no modification.

'It is a newer material than steel.' GRP has been in continuous UK infrastructure use since the 1970s. Engineered Composites has been supplying it since 1986.

GRP Fencing – Tested to Standard or Just Assumed?

GRP fencing is widely specified for rail, utilities and infrastructure because it resists
corrosion and performs well in aggressive environments.

But corrosion resistance is not the same as structural verification.

Has the fencing system you are specifying actually been tested for wind load and structural
performance?

Can your supplier provide documented test evidence?

In exposed environments, unverified fencing can lead to excessive deflection, premature
failure and compliance issues.

If the performance data is unclear, the risk sits with the project.

Introducing the new ENGRail Modular Handrail System From Engineered Composites.

Across rail, utilities, and industrial construction projects, engineers are increasingly looking
beyond traditional steel barriers towards materials that offer longer service life and lower
maintenance requirements.

One of the latest developments reflecting this shift is the ENGRAIL 51mm Box Section
Modular GRP Handrail System.

Manufactured using pultruded Glass Reinforced Plastic profiles, the system has been

GRP rebar lasts 100+ years.

Corrosion is not a design flaw. It is a material inevitability.

When moisture and chlorides reach steel reinforcement, the clock starts ticking.

Cracking. Spalling. Repair. Replacement.

Are your GRP handrails and GRP grating actually designed for the load they are carrying?

In infrastructure and industrial environments, it is not corrosion that causes failure first. It is
incorrect loading assumptions.

We still see projects where:

• Span tables are not reviewed
• Deflection limits are not confirmed
• Load categories are assumed rather than verified

GRP access systems must be engineered for horizontal rail loads, imposed foot traffic loads,
and correct support spacing.

Without that technical clarity, you risk instability, compliance issues, and future liability.

BS 476-7 has been withdrawn from Approved Document B.

If you are still specifying GRP products using “Class 1” or “Class 2” fire ratings, you need to
check your documentation.

From March 2025, EN 13501-1 is the recognised reaction to fire classification for UK
construction products.

Unlike BS 476-7, the new system measures:

• Contribution to fire
• Smoke production
• Flaming droplets

A compliant classification must include all required components.

There is no direct conversion between the old and new systems. A historic Class 1 result
does not automatically translate into a high Euroclass. Products must be tested.

If your supplier cannot provide a full EN 13501-1 classification from an accredited laboratory,
the fire performance data may no longer be recognised under current Building Regulations.

Are you specifying GRP based on a drawing… or verified performance data?

GRP structural profiles are increasingly used in rail, utilities, water treatment, and industrial
construction. But not all GRP on the market meets the same performance standards.

If you are purchasing GRP pultruded profiles, ask yourself:

• Have you been given confirmation of the structural grade?
• Do you know whether the material meets EN 13706 Parts 1, 2 and 3?
• Have you seen the fire classification to EN 13501-1 in full?
• Can the supplier demonstrate dimensional tolerances and quality control systems?
• Is full batch traceability available?

If the answer to any of these questions is unclear, you may be introducing unnecessary risk
into your project.

Substandard GRP can lead to reduced load performance, fire non-compliance, premature
degradation, and insurance exposure. On regulated infrastructure projects, that risk is rarely
visible at point of purchase but becomes critical later.

Not all GRP is created equal.

That might sound obvious, but across the UK I am seeing composite products installed that carry no independent fire certification, no verified structural grade and no traceable test data. They look the part. They are sold as compliant. But where is the evidence?

Since March 2025, EN 13501-1 has replaced BS 476-7 in Approved Document B. Fire classification is no longer just about surface spread of flame. It now covers heat release, smoke and flaming droplets. If your supplier is still relying on legacy paperwork, that should concern you.

Structural profiles must meet EN 13706 grades. E17 is not the same as E23. Handrails must be load tested to the correct application category. Grating should comply with BS 4592. GRP rebar must be backed by tensile and modulus data aligned to recognised design guidance.

None of this is optional.

GRP is an exceptional material when it is manufactured, tested and specified correctly. It delivers corrosion resistance, weight reduction and long service life. But performance without documentation is just a claim.

If your supplier cannot provide the fire certificate, the mechanical test report and the standard reference, ask yourself what you are really buying.

Ask the questions.
Demand the evidence.
Protect your project.
