🟧 Crane Tip Tuesday – Your Hoist Is Designed to Lift, Not Drag!

👋 Hi, I’m Lee from Yaplex.

This week’s tip is about something we see more often than you might think — side pulling.

Just because your crane can move a load doesn’t mean it should be pulled from any angle.

Hoists are designed to lift loads vertically. Pulling or dragging a load sideways can place unnecessary forces on the hoist, rope or chain, hook and surrounding crane components.

Over time, this can lead to:

🟧 Increased wear on the hoist chain or wire rope
🟧 Damage to hooks and lifting accessories
🟧 Poor chain or rope guidance
🟧 Unnecessary loading on crane components
🟧 An increased risk of an uncontrolled load movement

Before lifting, position the hoist directly above the load wherever possible and make sure the lifting path is clear.

It’s a simple habit, but one that can help protect your equipment, reduce unnecessary wear and, most importantly, keep lifting operations safer.

Remember: lift vertically — don’t drag sideways.

🟧 Yaplex Project Spotlight

👋 Hi, I'm Lee from Yaplex.

I wanted to share one of our recent projects that shows how the right lifting equipment can completely change a difficult manual handling operation.

🟧 The Challenge:

Our customer needed a safe and practical way to lift, handle and rotate large cold storage containers weighing up to 300kg.
Because of both their weight and physical size, the containers were simply too large and awkward to be safely handled by operators.
And lifting was only part of the challenge.
The containers also needed to be rotated and accurately positioned during the handling process, while still giving the operator good control of the load.

🟧 The Yaplex Solution:

We designed and supplied a freestanding gantry arrangement incorporating an aluminium rail system, giving the operator smooth and lightweight movement across the working area.
Mounted from the rail system is one of our electro-pneumatic balance arms, combined with vacuum lifting technology specifically designed around the container.

The system allows the operator to:

🟧 Pick up containers weighing up to 300kg
🟧 Move the load smoothly around the working area
🟧 Lift and lower with precise control
🟧 Safely rotate the container while suspended
🟧 Accurately position the load with minimal physical effort

The combination of the balance arm and vacuum technology means that something which would otherwise be extremely difficult to handle can now be controlled safely and comfortably by the operator.

🟧 The Result:

A bespoke handling system designed around the customer's actual production process, helping to reduce manual handling, improve operator ergonomics and make the overall operation safer and more efficient.
For me, this is what material handling is all about.

It's not always about simply lifting something heavy. Sometimes it's the size, shape, movement and positioning of the load that creates the real challenge.
That's where designing the right solution around the application makes all the difference.
