If youโve travelled on routes such as the M8 or A9, you may have seen ongoing works at bridge decks. These are often bridge joint replacements or upgrades, which play a vital role in keeping our infrastructure safe and performing as it should.
At Diack and Macaulay Ltd, we regularly carry out these installations across Scotland. The photos below show two recent bridge joint installs we completed in the North of Scotland.
๐ค Type 5 Joint (Black) โ a long-established and reliable bridge joint commonly used across the network.
โ๏ธ Mageba Joint (Grey) โ a new joint system currently being trialled, the first of its kind in Scotland. These joints are designed to handle heavier traffic loads, accommodate greater structural movement, and provide improved durability and waterproofing.
๐ง Why are bridge joints important?
They allow bridges to safely expand, contract, and move under traffic loads and temperature changes. Without properly maintained joints, water can enter the structure and lead to deterioration over time. Maintaining and upgrading them is key to extending the lifespan of bridges and ensuring safe journeys for road users.
