If you’ve travelled on routes such as the M8 or A9, you may have seen ongoing works at bridge decks. These are often bridge joint replacements or upgrades, which play a vital role in keeping our infrastructure safe and performing as it should.

At Diack and Macaulay Ltd, we regularly carry out these installations across Scotland. The photos below show two recent bridge joint installs we completed in the North of Scotland.

🖤 Type 5 Joint (Black) – a long-established and reliable bridge joint commonly used across the network.

⚙️ Mageba Joint (Grey) – a new joint system currently being trialled, the first of its kind in Scotland. These joints are designed to handle heavier traffic loads, accommodate greater structural movement, and provide improved durability and waterproofing.

🔧 Why are bridge joints important?
They allow bridges to safely expand, contract, and move under traffic loads and temperature changes. Without properly maintained joints, water can enter the structure and lead to deterioration over time. Maintaining and upgrading them is key to extending the lifespan of bridges and ensuring safe journeys for road users.

The following pictures show 2 Bridge Joint instals that we carried out in the North of Scotland.

The black joint is a Type 5; The grey joint is a brand new 'Mageba' joint. This is a trial, first of its kind in Scotland.

These joints offer several key benefits:

𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙨𝙥𝙤𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩: 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙡𝙚𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜

Just outside Linwood, this former railway bridge—now part of the National Cycle Network—needed structural upgrades to meet modern highway standards.

With limited access and heavy surface water runoff from nearby fields, the site came with its own set of challenges. Our team managed excavation, reinforcement, concrete works, steel arch installation, and full landscaping to deliver a robust, lasting result.
