Rest assured we're here to help, every step of the way! I'm Rick Collyer, Executive Director of Hephaestus Carpentry and Construction. I was born and raised in Chudleigh, which is where our business is currently based but we cover all areas from Plymouth to Cullompton and everything in between! I have 10 years of experience within this industry, beginning in May 2012 as an Apprentice with Bovey Co

nstruction, and progressing my way to Site Manager in January 2018. My specialist skills include Complex Cut Roof Structures and Timber Framing. These are skills I have honed over my time in construction. Whilst still an Apprentice I won 1st place in the Regional heats for Skills Build in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall, as well as 3rd place in the National World Skills UK competition. In 2017, I was also the winner of South Devon College's Apprentice of the Year and Best Level 3 Apprentice across the College. Some of my previous builds include a Garden Bar (2021), an Office structure within a showroom (2022), a Dining Room floor (2021), a Kitchen fitting (2021), a Pond structure (2021), 2X Pub Bar fits (2020), a Spiral Staircase (2021) and Built-in Wardrobes (2022).

GENUINELY HEARTBREAKING! 😭

This happens a few times a year and it is so upsetting everytime.

Ill be called out to quote for a job, and after running through a few options with the customer, ill go home, write up the quote and send it over. Ill then get an email back or a phone call saying they have either decided to go with a cheaper quote or they have decided to go with someone that can get to them sooner. Completely fair enough and i always part ways on respectful terms letting the customer know that they are welcome to contact me in the future if anything changes or for any other work.

A week or two later, i get the dreaded call!
The carpenter they have gone with talked them into paying money up front (never do this) and has completely ruined the job and now wont answer the phone!!!! 😡

I then head back to the job to assess the damage and have to have the awful conversation of explaining that the original quote will now have to be significantly more as repairing someone elses rough work is a much bigger job. In these situations, i always get the costs down as much as humanly possible by calling in favours from other trades i work with regularly, negotiating materials where possible and working at a lower rate if i can.

There are obviously rip off merchants out there but please remember, if an experienced tradesman with a good reputation gives you a quote, the quote will likely have been very carefully calculated. After working out materials down to the last screw, tube of adhesive or carpet protection, they would have called around a few builders merchants to find the best price on different materials as prices fluctuate regularly, then they will work out exactly how long the job will take with every hour being assigned a role. If another quote then comes in at half the price, they are either planning on making zero profit (obviously this is not the case) or they are going to rush the job and cut corners.

I hope this helps someone avoid ending up in this situation in the future.

🌟Loft conversion🌟

What a cracking job this was for the team! A lovely little loft conversion in chudleigh to add another two bedrooms. We even had enough space to maintain a load of extra loft storage on both sides of the roof to maximise the use of space!

We really enjoyed this one! We hope you guys are enjoying the new found space 👌

⭐️Old floorboard rejuvenation⭐️

We've been over in Hennock do some work to revitalise this tired old floor, and just look at the size of those boards! 🤩 You certainly don't see boards that big anymore!

If you've got an older home that needs some love, care and attention to bring your fabulous features back to life, drop us a message!

We were able to repair a few of the damaged areas as well and fill in some gaps, as well as fit some pine skirting all the way around to maintain the aesthetic and complete the look.

Really enjoyed dismantling and reassembling this mega size, hand made four poster bed, made out of one of our clients old wardrobes. What and difference it made!

Carrying on this week back onto a nice big green oak balcony over in Teignmouth. Luckily the weather has held off for us! 🌧🌧

Our latest project, based in Newton Abbot.

A nice little media wall to create a great feature of the living room and maximise the use of the space. It'll look even better once the plaster drys and then we can get the inset lights back on! 😁 one more visit to go just to fit the skirting back on and we're done!
