At Cairnhill, we’re proud to reflect on some of our long-standing partnerships, and one that we are especially proud of is our support for Strathaven Miniature Railway, home to Scotland’s oldest continuously running miniature railway in Strathaven Park.

For over 50 years, the society has been helping keep the spirit of steam in service, operating steam, petrol, and electric locomotives whilst creating a space where engineering knowledge can be shared across generations. From testing and maintenance to restoration and operation, the railway provides members with hands-on experience and keeping traditional model engineering skills firmly on the right track.

We’re honoured to have played a part in the society’s journey. After many years without a tunnel, Cairnhill designed, built, and installed the current tunnel and extension to mark the 75th anniversary of the railway operating in the park, helping to ensure the railway continues full steam ahead for future generations. In recognition of our contribution, the organisation commemorated Cairnhill in a very special way by naming a locomotive ‘Cairnhill’ in our honour.

The Cairnhill is a serviced and maintained 5” gauge steam locomotive, built in a 0-6-0-wheel configuration, and is primarily used to introduce junior members and learners to the world of live steam. From understanding basic knowledge to developing practical skills, it helps inspire railway enthusiasts and engineers alike.

Much like our railways themselves, preserving engineering heritage and investing in local communities is something we believe should always keep moving forward. We are excited to continue supporting Strathaven Model Society and help to ensure this railway tradition remains for many years to come.

For Cairnhill’s C-Met Division, reverse engineering is a core capability that supports a wide range of customer requirements.

This week, Cairnhill welcomed OR3D to our premises to deliver specialist training to members of the C-Met team in the use of Geomagic Design X.

Over three days, the team worked with scan data and .STL mesh files, using mesh sketches to recreate and reproduce complex geometries captured from original components. Leveraging our range of capture technologies — including LiDAR scanning, laser line probes, and drones — we can accurately capture, recreate, and reproduce components, structures, and assets of all shapes and sizes.

Whether the requirement is reverse engineering, inspection, design verification, legacy component replacement, fabrication support, or digital modelling, C-Met supports customers from initial scan through to a usable digital output.

A great opportunity for the team to further strengthen our technical capabilities and continue delivering high-quality solutions to our customers.

We’re proud to have successfully completed a complex programme of structural repairs to Avonmouth Bridge — delivered safely, on time, and under budget.

The works were carefully coordinated across day and night shifts, with welding and grinding undertaken during night closures to minimise disruption and vibration, while protective coating works progressed during the day using a specialist three-coat paint system. In close collaboration with the client, the team successfully delivered 66 individual welding repairs in line with road closures and traffic management requirements.

Working within confined space conditions inside the bridge’s box girders, our team utilised state-of-the-art welding, extraction, and air-fed RPE systems, supported by specialist rescue procedures and fully trained operatives. Every repair followed a rigorous quality assurance process, including NDT inspections before and after re-welding to confirm structural integrity.

Despite weather-related downtime, our dedicated team completed the works successfully; delivered with professionalism, strong communication, and effective site leadership throughout.
