What actually causes tank and bund failure?

Most tank and bund failures are the result of gradual deterioration that goes unnoticed over time. Chemical exposure, coating breakdown, concrete cracking, joint failure and corrosion can all slowly reduce the effectiveness of a containment system. By the time visible signs appear, the underlying structure may already be compromised.

This is how reactive repairs often become a cycle. They address the immediate issue, but not always the root cause.

GRP lining systems are widely used to restore and protect existing containment assets. By creating a seamless, chemically resistant barrier, they help prevent further degradation, extend service life and reduce the need for costly replacement.

The key is identifying deterioration early and acting before a maintenance issue becomes a containment failure.

If you're assessing the condition of a tank, bund or containment structure and would like advice on repair or refurbishment options, get in touch with our team.

As temperatures rise across the UK, material performance becomes a more visible operational issue for infrastructure and industrial assets.

High temperatures accelerate expansion, warping, corrosion, coating failure, and long-term wear. In infrastructure and industrial environments, that often means more inspections, more maintenance, and more downtime.

This is one reason composites continue to gain attention across sectors including utilities, rail, marine, and infrastructure. Composites offer dimensional stability in high temperatures, inherent corrosion resistance, and lower maintenance requirements. That helps reduce warping, remove common failure points, and minimise reactive spending and unplanned interventions in demanding conditions.

If you're specifying materials for high-traffic or outdoor applications, we're happy to talk through what composites could offer your project.

🏅 We’re pleased to share that SGI Composites is now a Bronze member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School.

The School brings together organisations across the built environment to improve knowledge, capability and collaboration around sustainability, responsible sourcing, carbon reduction and social value.

For us, this is part of a wider commitment to strengthening how we operate as a business and how we support our customers across infrastructure, utilities and industrial projects.

As composite solutions continue to play a growing role in long-life, low-maintenance infrastructure, it’s important that we continue investing in better processes, better understanding and continuous improvement across sustainability and responsible business practices.

We look forward to engaging with the School’s learning programmes, resources and wider industry network over the coming months.

In the spotlight – it’s Anthony Finch, Key Account Manager 👋

What makes Anthony such an important part of our team is his combination of hands-on experience, practical thinking and understanding of what customers need to make projects work.

Anthony started out in site installation and fabrication, building the kind of practical knowledge that only comes from hands-on experience. That background now plays a big part in how he supports customers today – helping guide projects from early-stage design and planning right through to delivery.

He is also involved in our R&D activity, helping develop innovative composite solutions for the industries we support.

Anthony brings a proactive approach, strong technical understanding and a real focus on delivering value on every project. We’re proud to have his experience and industry knowledge as part of the SGI Composites team.

(Feel free to say hi to Anthony in the comments 👇 or share a project you’ve worked on together.)

A recently delivered bespoke Safe Spill bund for a leading supplier of pharmaceutical equipment.

With initial dimensions and requirements from the customer, our team created drawings for approval to make sure everything was right first time.

Once approved, we created a one-off mould and built the bund using durable, chemical-resistant materials to ensure reliable performance in any environment.

After finishing, the unit was fitted with grating and mounting feet, then securely assembled using our ‘M’ Clips for a precise and dependable fit.

A straightforward, made-to-measure solution built to perform.

If you're specifying for water and utilities infrastructure, come and find us at the Water Equipment Show in Telford on 14 May.

The water and utilities sector operates under clear pressure to extend asset life, manage risk, and improve environmental performance. Material choice and system design play a direct role in this.

On the stand, we'll be covering how GRP solutions support:
– Pipework and vessels that resist corrosion in aggressive chemical and wastewater environments, without the maintenance cycle of steel
– Structural composites proven across UK water and utilities infrastructure, from pumping stations to treatment works
– Linings and coatings for bund and tank chemical resistance and long-term containment integrity
– Spill containment solutions that meet regulatory requirements and protect site safety and the surrounding environment

Drop by stand F35 to discuss current projects or upcoming requirements.

The event is free to attend, register your space here: https://thewaterequipmentshow26.eventreference.com/register

Happy Earth Day from SGI Composites!

Sustainability has always been part of the composites story. GRP and FRP are inherently long-lasting materials, reducing the need for replacement and the resources that come with it.

But we don't want to rely on that alone. Our shift to rPET resin, derived from recycled plastic bottles, has already made a meaningful difference to our carbon emissions, and this year we've set measurable targets to push us further still.

Here's where we're focusing:
⚡ Energy - Replacing fossil-fuel-based equipment with IR heating and electric systems to reduce the carbon intensity of our manufacturing processes.

🌿 Materials Innovation - Exploring new product development projects built around modular design and natural fibres, the next chapter in sustainable composites.

🌱 Biodiversity - Creating an employee garden and embedding green initiatives across our site, because a sustainable business starts with the place we all come to work.

📄 Going Paperless - Digitising our manufacturing processes to cut waste and build smarter, more efficient ways of working.

We're at the start of some of these, but we're genuinely excited about where this takes us. Composites have always been a forward-thinking material, and we're committed to making sure the way we produce them reflects that same spirit.

Happy Earth Day.

GRP linings play a critical role in protecting assets. In fuel storage, water infrastructure and chemical environments, the priority is consistent performance over time. That means resistance to corrosion, controlled application, and a system that can be relied on long after installation.

Our recent project on St Helena Island shows how this works in practice.
We developed a controlled approach covering material selection, surface preparation and on-site application. The result is a GRP lining system built for long-term durability, supporting reliable operation in a location where maintenance access is limited and disruption carries significant cost.

A look behind the scenes over the past few months as the team fabricated the bridges and high-level access platforms for a 2,000LM roof walkway system, recently installed on a hospital project.

Design and manufacture are handled in house by our team, giving full control from concept through to delivery. Everything is then built, aligned and checked in the workshop before heading to site, helping installation run smoothly and keeping disruption to a minimum.

Attention to detail runs through every stage, right down to keeping the workshop clean, organised and ready for the next project.
