Letters after a company name don't mean much unless you know what they cover.

Ours start with ISO 9001, certified by BSI. That's about how we run things: booking visits, recording what we find and following up faults, so your records actually make sense when someone asks for them.

For extinguisher servicing we're BAFE registered too (ID 300447). You can look that up on BAFE's own register, and it's worth doing with anyone you're thinking of using.

Family run in Colne since 1994. Any questions, ring us on 01282 861111.

Bonfire Night is just around the corner – but do you know the law around fireworks?

Before you light up the night, make sure you know what’s legal and what isn’t:

- You must be 18 or over to buy fireworks or sparklers
- Anyone under 18 must not possess fireworks in a public place.
- Being caught with fireworks in public could result in an ÂŁ80 on-the-spot fine
- Fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am
- It is also an offence to obstruct emergency workers.

Breaking the law could result in a fine, being taken to court or a more serious penalty.

So, before you celebrate this Bonfire Night, think about the consequences and please celebrate responsibly.

Moving into a new unit soon? Worth a second look at the fire extinguishers already on the wall.

They were put there for whoever had the place before you, not necessarily for what you're planning to do with it. We turn up to plenty of units where the extinguishers are present, serviced and in date, just not the right ones for the business moving in.

Happy to come and take a look before you get settled. Call us on 01282 861111 and we'll sort it before it becomes a problem.

Most false alarms in a building come from the same two or three detectors.

Usually it's the wrong device in the wrong place. An optical smoke detector can't tell steam from smoke, so put one near a dishwasher, a shower room or a toaster and it'll keep going off. Same story with dust in a workshop.

The answer is normally a heat detector or a multi-sensor in that spot, and sometimes just moving the head a couple of metres away from a doorway.

Before changing anything, keep a note of each activation. Device number, time, and what was going on in the building at the time. The pattern usually shows itself within a few weeks.

It's worth sorting out. People who have evacuated four times for nothing won't move as quickly on the fifth.

If you've got one that keeps tripping, give us a ring on 01282 861111 and we'll find out why.

A powder extinguisher on the wall next to the fryer. We see it a lot, and it's the wrong kit for the job.

Cooking oil has a class all of its own, Class F, because it doesn't behave like anything else. A fryer holds so much heat that it'll still be above its own ignition point long after the flames look to be out. Powder or CO2 might knock it down, but it can relight, and a hard blast of CO2 can send burning oil across the kitchen.

Wet chemical is what you want. It reacts with the hot fat and forms a soapy layer over the top, sealing it and cooling it at the same time. It goes on gently, through a long lance, which is exactly why staff need showing how to use one rather than hoping for the best.

And it isn't only pubs and restaurants. Care homes, schools, clubs with a function room, canteens on industrial units. The kitchen often goes in years after the fire safety was sorted out.

Two things worth checking this week: is there a wet chemical extinguisher in your kitchen, and could someone get to the fire blanket without walking past the fryer?

If you're not sure what you've got, we'll come and have a look. 01282 861111.

Have a think about how many things get put on charge in your building overnight.

Electric forklifts. Cordless tool batteries on the bench. The floor scrubber. Somebody's e-bike parked in the back corridor. Five or six years ago most of that wasn't there, and for a lot of places the fire extinguishers haven't changed since.

Lithium batteries don't behave like an ordinary fire. When a cell fails it generates its own heat and releases oxygen as it breaks down, so smothering it doesn't really work. A normal powder or CO2 extinguisher might put the flames out on the outside, but the cell underneath can quite happily start again.

There are extinguishers made for exactly this. They're called AVD, and they're worth having wherever you've got batteries charging or being stored.

The first job is just knowing where the charging happens on your site, because it's usually more places than people expect.

If you want someone to come and have a proper look at what you've got, ring the team on 01282 861111.

The annual extinguisher service is the same every year. The bill isn't always, and that catches a few people out.

Here's why. On top of the yearly check, extinguishers are also on longer cycles. Water, foam, powder and wet chemical units need an extended service every five years, which means emptying them, checking them inside and refilling. CO2 units are on a ten-year cycle and get pressure tested instead.

So you can have a quiet year, then a year where a chunk of them need proper work doing. Nothing's gone wrong. It's just come round.

The handy bit is that it's all predictable. Once you know what's due and when, you can plan for it rather than being caught on the hop.

Not sure where your extinguishers are up to? Give the team a ring on 01282 861111 and we'll go through them with you.

If you look after more than one building, you'll probably recognise this one.

Every site came with its own extinguisher servicing arrangement, usually from whoever the previous owner or the landlord happened to use. So now there are two or three different companies involved, all working to different dates, and the certificates arrive at different times of the year.

The servicing gets done. It's the paperwork that turns into a headache. The moment somebody asks you to prove every site is in date, you're ringing round three firms to get hold of it.

Putting the lot with one company usually sorts it. One schedule, one number to call, one folder of records, and engineers who actually know your buildings.

If you've a few sites and it's become an admin job, give us a ring on 01282 861111 and we'll take a look at all of them.

Not every extinguisher problem is a missing service label. Quite often it's simply that the extinguisher isn't where it's supposed to be.

A new machine goes in, racking gets shifted, somebody carries the CO2 off to another room and forgets to bring it back. All perfectly innocent, and all of it leaves a gap.

Extinguishers are put where they are for a reason. It's based on the risk in that area and how far someone has to walk to reach one. Move it down to the far end of the building and that corner isn't covered any more, even though nothing has actually gone missing.

If your unit or warehouse has been reorganised recently, have a walk round and check each one is still on its bracket, still got a sign above it, and still where your paperwork says it is.

Did you know it's actually the law for most business premises to have a fire risk assessment, and for it to be kept up to date? Not just a box-ticking exercise — a proper one, done by someone who knows what they're looking for.

A lot of businesses have one from years ago, or never had one done at all. If a fire inspector turns up and finds nothing, that's a problem you don't want.

Want to check where you stand? Call 01282 861111 and we'll talk you through it. No obligation.
