It’s 🕰️

Priceless art saved by D-Drill 🖼️

Priceless pieces of tiled art at the old Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital in Newcastle needed to be safely removed as a ward was being demolished. Several collections of Royal Doulton panels displaying a number of scenes from famous nursery rhymes had been on display for over 100 years.

The tiles, which are worth thousands of pounds, were mounted across the RVI hospital’s children ward during the reign of Kind Edward VII (1901-1910) and had remained there until the children’s ward closed in 2009.

Demolition work had started and the tiles had to be removed without damage, we were asked to remove the tiles with extreme precision so that some could be remounted on the walls of the new state-of-the-art RVI Hospital in Queen Victoria Road in the city.

The process was started by gluing a board and holding a frame on the face of the tiles, and then cutting down behind the panels so that there was nothing left bar the original tile cement. That meant they could then be moved safely. D-Drill experts cut a chase around the perimeter through the plaster and render in which the panels were supported using a 110volt diamond hand held saw.

They would have normally used a wire saw drive machine powered by 3phs electric/hydraulic but because it was a live, working hospital, they couldn’t make use of that type of power, so 110-volt electricity had to be used only. The diamond wire was fed into the chase and on to a wire saw drive machine which was powered by a 110-volt electric Shibuya 2521 drive motor fitted with a bespoke rubber drive pulley wheel, then onto the guide pulley wheel system.

The equipment was built and put together in D-Drill’s own workshop and gave precise control over the diamond wire as it cut down behind the panels without cutting the tiles.

It was crucial that every step of the job was carried out to pin-point accuracy due to the value of the 68 panels. That is where D-Drill’s expertise made them the stand-out choice for the job.

Each panel was safely removed and handed over to the delighted client. Three have already remounted and many others have gone into storage.

As Managing Director of D-Drill, I often reflect on what my role truly looks like day to day. Beyond championing our incredible industry, promoting Diamond Drilling nationwide, supporting charity initiatives, and advising Government through the Construction Skills Mission Board, the reality is… I spend much of my time watching spinning plates.

Remember those at the circus? That’s it. Plates spinning all day, every day—projects, people, relationships, finances. We handle 700–1000 jobs a month nationwide up & down the UK, and while I’d love to say none ever wobble… they do.

When a plate drops, I don’t dwell—I pick up the pieces (but still not taking my eye of the other plates still spinning), protect what matters, negotiate the best outcome for everyone, and rebuild. Not as it was, but better—stronger, smarter, more resilient, with my brilliant team beside me.

Then? We start spinning again.

At this rate, I may just run away with the circus 🎪

But tell me—what plates are you spinning right now?

D-Drill apprentice James is making the cut in construction

D-Drill & Sawing managing director and former Build UK chair Julie White is passionate about bringing through the next generation of workforce in the construction industry. So much so, that Julie was recently appointed onto the Government’s Construction Skills Mission Board.

In this regular feature on the D-Drill website, The Real Apprentice – You Are Hired, Julie has been catching up with apprentices in the industry both within D-Drill and at other companies in the sector to show the breadth of careers on offer – with hundreds of jobs in the industry!

D-Drill & Sawing’s Diamond Drilling Apprentice James Hawkins may only be 21 years of age, but he has already set his sights on securing his third qualification in the construction industry. Having had stints in drylining and plumbing, the County Durham prospect shares why he feels like he’s finally found a home in his current role.

James said: “I’ve always been a hands-on person and felt like working in construction was the right industry for me. My dad used to work on the train tracks but my uncle was a bricklayer, so I’ve seen the industry from a distance, but up until recently it has been difficult to decide exactly what I wanted to do.

“After leaving school I achieved a Level 1 plumbing qualification, but I then decided to pursue a role in drylining for four years, where I became a qualified interior systems installer.

“That role involved carrying plasterboard up flights of stairs and attaching them to the ceiling. It was hard, enjoyable work, but I decided to give my body a break by looking at other opportunities
“That’s when I heard about the apprenticeship opening at D-Drill’s Newcastle branch through my friends, and since then I haven’t looked back.

“I work in the North East branch and my boss is David Soulsby who is a former D-Drill apprentice himself, and has been with the business for around 25 years, so he is a brilliant mentor to learn from.

“I split my time between working on live sites - which at the moment mainly involves new-build homes – and also spending time at the Drilling and Sawing Association’s training base to learn how to use the equipment.

“When I tell people that I am a diamond driller it stops most of them in their tracks, as they think I am drilling for diamonds. I let them think that for a while before telling them that although it’s not as lucrative as that, it’s very cool and varied!

“For anyone wanting to get into the diamond drilling industry I’d say go for it – your mind will always be busy, you’ll never get bored and it’s a great opportunity to always be learning.”

Julie’s thoughts: “It’s fantastic to see James’ family rubbing off on him by pursuing a career in the construction industry, but as he said himself, he wasn’t aware of half of the different job roles available to him from a young age – and that is something that needs to change.
“There are hundreds of trades out there in need of new talent - from diamond drillers to white liners, and steeple jackers to pointed roofers – and as an industry we need to keep shining a spotlight on these roles to the younger generations.
“It’s important that young people are given an opportunity to try out different trades early on in their career to find out what works for them, just as James has done, and I’m delighted he feels like he has now found a home with D-Drill & Sawing, where he is a valued member of our nationwide team.”

Diversity Fuelling Growth – Reflections from

Family businesses really are the beating heart of our communities, and it was a privilege to be part of the Family Business UK Annual Conference 2026, marking 25 years of championing family enterprise.

I was delighted to join an inspiring panel for the session “Diversity Fuelling Growth”, expertly facilitated by Cara Macklin, alongside good friend, Dr Ronnie Savage (Jomas Associates) and Emma Ayres (Bennie Group). Together, we explored how diversity in leadership isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s a powerful driver of growth, resilience and long‑term success.

From my perspective at D‑Drill, the conversation centred on real experiences rather than theory, including:

• Journeys into leadership – making unexpected or difficult choices and why they mattered

• Challenges and successes – and the people and decisions that made the biggest difference

• Where diversity genuinely fuels growth – real examples from our own businesses and others

• Creating the right conditions – what leaders can do to ensure diverse voices are heard and valued

• Recognising unconscious bias – and avoiding the trap of “this is how we’ve always done it”

• Being the first or only one in the room – and how leaders can make those spaces more inclusive

• Practical advice for family businesses – from NextGen leaders to senior generations and advisers

What really stood out was the honesty in the room and the shared belief that inclusive leadership leads to better decision‑making, stronger innovation and more sustainable growth.

A huge thank you to Family Business UK for bringing together such an engaged audience and creating space for meaningful, practical conversations.

I’m proud to have been part of it.
