Protecting ATEX AC Equipment from Marine Corrosion

The marine environment presents a significant challenge for ATEX AC equipment. Constant exposure to moisture, salt spray, and corrosive conditions can rapidly deteriorate heat exchangers, reducing efficiency, increasing energy consumption, and shortening equipment lifespan.

To combat these issues, corrosion protection is essential. That's why Tradewinds recommends Blygold coatings, a proven solution designed specifically for ATEX AC applications in harsh marine and offshore environments.

✅ Prevents corrosion and extends equipment life
✅ Can increase equipment lifespan by up to 3x

Blygold's specialised coatings create a protective barrier that shields components from corrosion while maintaining system performance. By protecting coils from corrosion, operators can minimise failures, reduce maintenance costs, and maximise operational reliability.

ATEX EXPLOSION SAFE SOLUTIONS FOR MARINE ENVIRONMENTS

Tradewinds offers a wide range of explosion-safe air conditioning systems for use in zone 2. We offer explosion-safe split systems, ceiling mounted and a mono block system in which the evaporator and condenser are integrated in a single housing.

The split systems are based on Toshiba, Daikin or Mitsubishi Heavy; a wide choice to make maintenance and integration with existing systems easier.

In addition, Tradewinds provides explosion-safe evaporators for use in zone 1. These evaporators can be supplied with a condenser / outdoor unit for use in non-classified areas or zone 2. The evaporators have been assessed by a Notified Body and provided with a Type Examination Certificate.

Restoring a Critical Chiller in Equatorial Guinea

Following a comprehensive system survey in 2024, Tradewinds identified the need to replace an ageing cooling system with a more modern and resilient solution. While the new system was being engineered and manufactured, we were asked to support the existing equipment and restore a critical chiller that had been out of service for over two years.

With the facility relying on a single operational chiller, the situation was urgent. Any failure of the remaining unit could have caused significant disruption to FPSO operations. Recognising the importance of the challenge, our Senior Engineer travelled to Equatorial Guinea at the end of 2025 to bring the Carrier 30HXC chiller back into service.

The project involved a detailed programme of installation work, system refitting, fault diagnosis, and specialist troubleshooting. During the investigation, several underlying issues were identified, including incorrect control software, misconfigured DIP switches, a failed 400A MCB, a corroded chilled water sensor, a faulty EEV cable connection causing system overcharging, and oil contamination within key system components.

Working alongside the client's onsite technicians, our engineer spent three intensive days troubleshooting and reverse-engineering the system to identify the root causes of failure. Through a methodical approach and extensive HVAC expertise, each issue was successfully resolved, allowing the chiller to be recommissioned and returned to operation.

This project highlights the importance of proactive maintenance, thorough fault diagnosis, and experienced engineering support when managing complex HVAC systems in demanding offshore environments. The successful restoration of this Carrier 30HXC chiller not only reduced operational risk but also helped safeguard the continued operation of the facility until the replacement system is installed.

We are proud of the expertise, teamwork, and dedication demonstrated throughout this project and look forward to returning in 2027 to install the new system designed in accordance with our survey findings and the client's operational requirements.
