Spring grass is coming—but is your herd’s rumen ready? 🌱🐄

Spring turnout is the most cost-effective move a dairy farm can make, but it’s also a high-risk transition. Moving from winter silage to lush spring grass (which can hit 18–25% crude protein) is a massive dietary shift.

If you move too fast, you risk SARA (Subacute Ruminal Acidosis), a drop in milk yield, and grass tetany.

The "Turnout Transition" Blueprint for 2026:

🕒 The 2-Hour Rule: Start with just 2–3 hours of grazing per day, building up over 10–14 days.
🌾 Buffer Feeding: Keep the silage available! Spring grass lacks the structural fibre of winter rations; buffer feeding stabilizes the rumen.
🦶 Mobility is Money: A single case of lameness can cost £180–£300. With cows walking miles more than they did in the shed, your flooring and cubicle comfort now dictate their performance later.
💧 Hydration Stations: A lactating cow can drink up to 100 litres a day. Check your trough refill rates before the herd hits the paddock.

The Secret Weapon: Indoor Comfort.
Even after turnout, cows often come back inside during wet spells or overnight. High-quality rubber flooring and cubicle mattresses ensure that when they are inside, they are resting, not stressing their hooves on bare concrete.

A well-rested cow on a comfortable mattress today is a high-performing cow on spring grass tomorrow.

The secret to a successful spring turnout? It starts inside the shed. 🐄🌱

As we approach the grazing season, the focus usually shifts to grass covers and fences. But the "grazing readiness" of your herd actually depends on how they’ve been resting during the winter.

Did you know a dairy cow naturally needs 12–14 hours of lying time per day?

Research suggests that for every hour of lost rest, you could be losing up to 1 litre of milk yield per cow. If your cows are "perching" or standing in cubicles instead of lying down, they aren't just tired—they’re at higher risk for lameness before they even hit the pasture.

Why Cow Comfort = Grazing Success:
✅ Hoof Health: Hard surfaces and poor cubicle comfort increase standing time, putting massive strain on hooves.
✅ Energy Reserves: A well-rested cow has better mobility to walk the distances required for grazing.
✅ The Transition: UK spring weather is unpredictable. When cows come back inside during wet spells, they need a high-comfort surface to recover.

Whether it’s latex foam mattresses or high-grip mats, providing a forgiving surface isn't just a "luxury"—it’s a direct investment in your mobility scores and your bulk tank.

Are your cows fighting for space?
Not with Cow-Welfare's Flex Feed 💚

By improving access to feed along the barrier, cows are able to reach more comfortably, helping to reduce pushing and competition during feeding time and creating a calmer environment for the herd.
