Biolectric are the market leaders in small scale AD systems with over 450 throughout the UK & Europe. Micro Biogas Experts
The idea of Biolectric originated in 2009 after seeing that there were no mass produced micro scale AD plants in Europe. After building a proof-of-concept installation in 2011, Philippe Jans – reinforced by the investor he found in the family Westerlund (Taste Invest) and toge

ther with Jan Palmaers and Jonathan Schrauwen – established Biolectric. Since building the first micro digester the system has seen many technical innovations (some patented) that has increased reliability. To date they have installed over 152 megawatts of energy potential in the form of electricity and heat. We pride ourselves on offering the correct advice and service to our clients, we listen and recommend solutions that are right for your business. Most of our business is gained through referrals as our customers are happy to recommend us to their associates.

🌱 Dairy Farms- Could Your Slurry Be Replacing More Bought-In Fertiliser?

Interesting insight from Alder BioInsights, one of the UK’s most respected independent agricultural and environmental consultancies:

“Digestate is a by-product of anaerobic digestion and is rich in nutrients, especially nitrogen. Research has shown digestate can effectively replace manufactured fertilisers, reducing reliance on imported fertiliser.”

This is an important point that is often overlooked when discussing farm-scale anaerobic digesters.

The nutrients don’t disappear during the AD process. The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium remain within the digestate, while the slurry simultaneously produces renewable electricity and heat.

For farmers, that means the same slurry can potentially deliver:

⚡ Renewable electricity
🔥 Renewable heat
🌱 Valuable fertiliser nutrients

When combined, it creates a genuinely circular farming system that can reduce purchased energy, reduce reliance on imported fertilisers and make better use of resources already produced on the farm.

Credit to Alder BioInsights for highlighting the growing importance of digestate and nutrient recycling within UK agriculture.

North Yorkshire Farm

From build to power production in just a few weeks.

This graph shows a recently commissioned Biolectric farm-scale anaerobic digester on a North Yorkshire dairy farm.

The yellow area shows when the plant was technically available and commissioned. The green area shows realised efficiency – when the biology starts converting slurry into biogas and generating electricity.

What I find most encouraging is how quickly the system has moved from installation to meaningful power production. Within just a few weeks of construction, the plant is already producing renewable electricity from slurry and continues to climb as the biology establishes itself.

Farmers often ask how long it takes before a plant starts delivering results. The answer is right here – measured in weeks, not months.

Turning a waste product into a valuable farm resource.

Great to be at Askham Bryan College today discussing the future of farm-scale anaerobic digestion with members of the Bioeconomy Cluster and other industry stakeholders.

The agricultural college refers to its 22kw Biolectric anaerobic digester as “The Electric Cow” – a great way of demonstrating what is possible when dairy slurry is viewed as a valuable resource rather than a waste product.

It was particularly encouraging to have Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) representatives in attendance and to see the level of engagement from everyone involved. The discussions highlighted the significant opportunity farm-scale AD offers to dairy farmers through lower energy costs, renewable electricity generation, improved nutrient management and greater farm resilience.

A big thank you to Askham Bryan College for hosting the event and for continuing to showcase practical innovation that can benefit the wider farming industry.

The technology is proven, the data is there, and with the right support, farm-scale AD could play an important role in the future of British agriculture.

Congratulations to the Hawkstone Farmers Choir on winning Britain’s Got Talent! 🎉🚜🎤

What started as a choir has become something much bigger — a chance to shine a spotlight on British farming and the people behind our food.

At a time when agriculture faces huge challenges, millions of people have just watched farmers take centre stage and show the passion, resilience and community spirit that exists across the industry. The choir also used their platform to raise awareness of mental health in farming, an issue that deserves far more attention.

Becoming the first choir ever to win Britain’s Got Talent is an incredible achievement and a proud moment for farming everywhere.

Well done to everyone involved, and to Jeremy Clarkson and the team for helping bring farming into living rooms across the country.

This one wasn’t just a win for a choir. It was a win for British farming. 🐄🌾🇬🇧

Happy World Milk Day on June 1st🥛🐄

It’s a difficult time for many dairy farmers. Costs remain high, margins are under pressure, and there’s no shortage of challenges. Yet every day, dairy farmers continue doing what they do best — producing high-quality food, caring for their animals, and keeping rural communities thriving.

Perhaps World Milk Day isn’t just about celebrating milk itself, but recognising the people behind it. The families who milk cows seven days a week, whatever the weather, and who continue investing in the future despite the uncertainty.

Dairy farmers don’t just produce milk. They produce food, steward the countryside, support local economies, and increasingly generate renewable energy and environmental benefits from their cows.

We know how hard our Biolectric farmers work and we support them 100%, so today, let’s raise a glass to the resilience, commitment and hard work of dairy farmers everywhere.

A big thank you to Fred Simcock for inviting us to Woofields Farm today to showcase his 74kW Biolectric system as part of the Kite Consulting dairy open day focused on improving farm efficiencies for Cotteswold Dairy farmers.

Fred farms around 1,000 acres, growing 200 acres of first wheats and 384 acres of forage maize, alongside a 600-head Friesian Holstein dairy herd with around 400 followers. The cows are housed year-round and fed a balanced ration based on grass and maize silage.

Fred has now been running his Biolectric plant for nearly two years and summed it up best himself when he said the system had “destroyed 85% of his electricity bill” — which, with 10 Lely Center Yeovil robots operating on the farm, is pretty incredible to hear.

The day was all about looking at practical ways dairy farms can improve efficiency, resilience and long-term profitability. Kite Consulting were giving plenty of good practical advice throughout the day and it was great to see so much open discussion around efficiency, slurry management, energy use and future-proofing dairy farms.

Events like this are hugely valuable because they allow farmers to see real systems operating on real farms and speak directly to other farmers about their experiences.

Also a big thank you to Kite Consulting for organising and hosting such a positive event — and to Fred and the team for putting on a fantastic hog roast for us all as well!

INFORMATION ON BIOLECTRIC SYSTEMS

Over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing a series of short videos explaining some of the thinking behind Biolectric systems and why certain design decisions have been made.

These aren’t sales videos — they’re practical explainers based on real experience from more than 450 farm installations across Europe.

We’ll cover topics such as twin engines, gas cooling technology, CHP efficiency, servicing and maintenance, slurry handling, biological stability, heat recovery, uptime, insurance, long-term operating costs, safety systems, carbon opportunities and why factory-built systems matter.

Our first video explains why Biolectric uses twin engines on most setups. We looked at large single-engine systems, but through experience found that two smaller engines delivered better efficiency, lower long-term maintenance costs and improved uptime.

The aim is simple: help farmers better understand what they’re investing in and why details matter with anaerobic digestion.

Great turnout at the SW Holstein Club farm open day yesterday 👏

A big thank you to Robert and his team at Littleton Farm, Gatehouse of Fleet, for hosting and opening the gates. A great farm, well run, and fully embracing renewables including a farm-scale AD plant, wind, biomass and solar.

Always impressive to see farm scale AD system that’s been running for over 12 years and still delivering — and hearing it described as a “no brainer” says everything.

Robert commented on what an incredible fertiliser that his digestate was and just wished he had more available

Brilliant to see such strong attendance and have so many good conversations with farmers in the area. There’s clearly a lot of interest right now, and it’s easy to see why with the pressures on energy and input costs.

Appreciate everyone who took the time to come along 👍
