Rising fuel prices are affecting everyone right now.

Including businesses like ours. But maybe not in the way you’d expect.

We track our fuel usage weekly through fuel cards, and recently our costs have increased by around £60 per week across just two vans

A Ford Transit Connect and a Vauxhall Vivaro.

For a well run business, increases like that can be managed. We plan ahead, budget carefully, and keep delivering for our customers.

The bigger issue? Uncertainty.

When headlines are full of fear about wars, inflation, and rising costs, many homeowners understandably decide to “wait and see.” Extensions get postponed. Boiler upgrades are delayed. Energy-saving improvements are pushed back.

And while waiting can feel like the safe option, it often costs more in the long run:

Last week… we lost a profitable job.

And honestly, I’m glad we did.

We had a customer enquire about a new boiler.
Called them the same day.
Booked in for the next day.
Turned up on time.

So far, exactly how it should be.

We sat down, talked through what they wanted… and then came the line:

“ChatGPT has advised me I need a Worcester Bosch 4000 30kW system boiler.”

Now here’s the problem.

For a 3 bed new build style property… that spec is massively oversized.

We’re talking unnecessary cost, wasted energy, reduced efficiency, and more wear on the system over time.

But it didn’t stop there.

The property already had a Gledhill pre-plumbed thermal store meaning a system boiler wasn’t just overkill… it was completely unsuitable.

In simple terms:
👉 It would have cost them more money
👉 It would have performed worse
👉 It would have been the wrong solution entirely

So we did our job.
We advised against it.

The result?

The customer didn’t agree…
Didn’t like that we challenged what AI had told them…
And asked us to leave.

Job lost.

But here’s the bigger question 👇
