What a fantastic evening for JB Engineering at the East Midlands Business of the Year Awards last Thursday! Sponsored by TheBusinessDesk.com.

The evening was filled with laughter, great conversations, plenty of jokes, and celebrations of the achievements of businesses from across the region.

Although we didn’t take home the award, we were incredibly proud to be recognised and to have the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic event. Being considered for this award means a great deal to us, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our amazing team.

A huge thank you to everyone at JB Engineering who continues to make what we do possible. We’re proud of our team and look forward to what the future holds!

And a special thank you to Seleena Creedon and Craig Harbron for submitting our award entry and for their continued support of the business.

The East Midlands is home to incredible businesses, talented people, and generations of hard work and ambition. JB Engineering (Hatton) Ltd is proud to be part of it.

This morning, we had a visit from someone asking about work experience here at JB Engineering (Hatton) Ltd. We were thrilled to hear that an aspiring engineer had considered us for their work experience week.

With that in mind, we’d like to reflect on the time David spent doing work experience here at JB Engineering (Hatton) Ltd. Over the course of the week, he designed and created a fire pit, which, wouldn’t you agree, was made to a very high standard.

It was great to have David here, engaging with the day-to-day realities of JB Engineering. He did a superb job and enjoyed it so much that he is now an apprentice of ours.

At JB Engineering, we are proud to support the next generation of engineers and feel that it is important to give students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience.

We look forward to welcoming our next aspiring engineer, who will be joining us for a week of work experience this December!

Two weeks ago, myself - Edem Spio - and Roger Morgan (http://www.rogermorgan.co.uk/) had a full-day's photography session aimed at capturing the people, processes, machinery, and craftsmanship that define J B Engineering (Hatton) Ltd.

As a passionate content creator, having the opportunity to assist Roger throughout the day was an eye-opening experience. It highlighted how much thought goes into creating images that tell a story. Every photo involved careful consideration of lighting, composition, perspective, safety, and timing. Roger constantly highlighted that what may appear to be a simple image often requires patience, collaboration, and multiple adjustments to achieve the desired result.

A key takeaway was the importance of showcasing the people behind the engineering. While our machinery and equipment demonstrate our technical capability, it is our skilled team whose expertise, precision, and commitment bring every project to life. Capturing engineers in action—fabricating, welding, operating machinery, designing components, and collaborating on the workshop floor—helped communicate the human side of engineering.

Another benefit of the photography session for me was the experience reinforced the value of visual storytelling in today's digital world. High-quality photography helps customers, partners, and future employees gain a genuine understanding of who we are, what we do, and the standards we uphold every day.

As I move on from J B Engineering after 9 wonderful months of growth and success, I leave with not only added-on skills but a better appreciation of the role that marketing can do to boost engineering facing businesses. I am most grateful to Jayne Bellenie, Chelsea Derry and Helen Williams for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the J B Engineering (Hatton) Ltd family as a Marketing Assistant. I do not take it for granted. I'll take with me the valuable memories and lessons.

Here are some shots from the session.

We have just received the wonderful news that JB Engineering has been shortlisted in the Business of the Year Awards 2026 – Family Business category.

Neil Evans and I are feeling honoured, proud, and incredibly happy.

Since our father's death in 2006, we have both travelled very personal growth journeys, particularly in our professional lives. In my wildest dreams, I never imagined that I would one day become Managing Director of JB Engineering. Leaving my first career as an NHS operating theatre sister and moving my family back to Derbyshire from Kent was a huge step.

Growing up, I watched my father, Barry Evans, dedicate countless hours to the company he founded. Yes, he could be dogmatic, stubborn, a risk-taker and sometimes impetuous (Evans family traits), but he was passionate about JB Engineering and proud of our home village of Hatton.
That passion and commitment helped build something much bigger than a family business.

JB Engineering isn't just about Neil and me. It is about our company directors, employees, past and present; our loyal customers; our trusted suppliers; and our deep roots within the Hatton community. Every person who has contributed to our journey has played a part in this recognition.
A special thank you must also go to Selena Creedon and Craig Harbon of Apexis Engineering for their invaluable support with our marketing and sales activities, and for helping us with our awards application.

Finally, I would like to remember my grandad, Stan Evans, who started this journey with Stan Evans & Sons. Without his vision, determination and hard work, none of us would be here celebrating this achievement today. This recognition is as much a tribute to the generations that came before us as to those helping to drive the business forward today.

To be shortlisted is a fantastic achievement, and we are truly grateful to everyone who has helped shape JB Engineering into the company it is today.

Over sixty of the finest companies and individuals from across the region are finalists
