Oil delivery on the way??? Do yourself a favour. When the oil truck arrives, turn off your boiler then close the valve on the oil tank (especially if you're low or out of oil). Once the oil delivery is complete wait ideally 12 hours (yes I know it's difficult) if possible but a bare minimum of 6 hours is a must before turning the oil back on and then your boiler. Why??? Well the oil is delivered at such a rate that any muck and water in your tank (and unless your tank is brand new, there will be both) will be stirred up and could be sucked through the oil line blocking the filters (see pic) and pipe. In these current temperatures, any water in the oil will separate overnight, settle in the lowest point in the pipe and freeze forming an 'ice plug'. This will stop your boiler in it's tracks and have you heading for the phone. If this does happen to you, don't feel bad, just call and I'll come sort it out - you're not the first and I doubt you'll be the last. And, just for those out there who are still not convinced - here's one I replaced less than 24 hrs after my original post.

As a rule - If it ain't leaking water - you almost certainly don't want a new boiler. Even if it is leaking water then it depends on where the water is leaking from. Stick with your old boiler until it really does die. I've got customers with 40 year old boilers that are showing no sign of giving up any time soon and a new 'condensing' boiler won't last anything like that long.
