14 years ago I was given the task of building a model boat complete with a cast iron sculpture of HMS Sirius at Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth.

The other day, after a trip over to the Isle of Wight, I had a walk around the area and was disappointed to discover that it has now been removed. Funny how things change without you even realising.

Today the memories popped up on my phone and it got me thinking... 14 years! Where has that time gone?

For those who don’t know, HMS Sirius was the flagship of the First Fleet that sailed from Portsmouth in 1787 and played a major role in establishing the first European settlement in Australia. Originally built as a merchant ship called Berwick, she was later converted by the Royal Navy and renamed after Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Sadly, she was wrecked on a reef off Norfolk Island in 1790 while delivering much-needed supplies to the struggling colony.

It's always nice looking back on projects that have been part of your journey, even when they’re no longer there to see.

A huge shout out to the LA Building team for an incredible effort this week! 👏💪

With temperatures outside already soaring, the lads have been working inside a tin roof structure where temperatures have reached an unbelievable 40°C+! 🥵 Despite the heat, the team's determination and hard work have kept the project moving forward.

Thanks to their fantastic effort, we've now got everything prepared and ready for the zinc roofing specialists to begin folding the fascias ready to begin installing next week. This will be a first for LA Building, and we're excited to be adding another specialist service to the range of high-quality solutions we can offer our clients.

It's great to see what can be achieved through teamwork, dedication, and a commitment to delivering the best results, no matter the conditions.

At our company, we know how important mental health is. The building trade can be tough physically and mentally, and sometimes the best thing a team can do is slow down, have a laugh, and spend some proper time together outside of the daily grind.

That’s why today we’ve decided to focus on team building, mindfulness, and reconnecting with nature…

So the lads are all making natural dream catchers. 🌿😂

Yet again, the quality of our guys is shining through.

When I get sent pictures and videos from the staff showing what they’ve achieved, it’s not just to show me they’ve been hard at work — it’s because they’re genuinely proud of the work they produce. And rightly so.

The attention to detail in this leadwork is outstanding 🔨✨

All of our lads have their own trade that they are highly trained in, but what makes this team special is how everyone mucks in together to create what I can only describe as amazing work.

At our company, we’re dedicated to delivering the best possible end result for every client — no matter what it takes behind the scenes.

Recently, after inspecting some old beams on a project, we knew they needed specialist attention. One phone call to one of our trusted sand blasting contacts and within minutes we had a price ready. The client was working on the other side of the world, so while most people were finishing for the day, we stayed up late to make sure we could discuss everything with them directly.

Once agreed, the job was underway within 48 hours.

Sometimes we have to go out of our way to give clients exactly what they want — the late nights, the calls, the organising, the problem solving — and most of it never gets seen. But that’s what commitment looks like to us.

Because great results don’t happen by accident. They happen through dedication, communication, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done properly.

One of the best things about being a local building firm is having a reliable, hardworking team around us and being trusted by local people with their homes and projects.

We’ve been incredibly lucky to secure some amazing larger projects across the area recently, including Passivhaus homes, extensions, new builds, and major renovations. It’s something we’re really proud of, and we’re grateful for every opportunity that comes our way.

But no matter how busy things get, we never forget the “little” jobs. And to our clients, these jobs are never small — because the improvements can have a huge and lasting impact on their homes and how they enjoy them for years to come.

Even when the big projects are in full swing and you see the vans everywhere, we can still fit in jobs like this one. A great little 3-day project (worked around the rain!) that has completely tidied up the area outside these new sliding doors from the living space into the garden. The patio extension will be a great usable space along with the little dwarf wall, to bring a symmetrical look to the old patio and a usable top to put MORE plants 🫢

Now, when the doors are open and the sun is shining, the whole space feels extended — bringing the inside and outside together perfectly. ☀️🏡

At our building firm, we dedicate ourselves to delivering a finish our customers will truly love. We take pride in every detail, every project, and every home we work in. But for us, it’s never just about the work itself.

We understand that when we step into your home, we become part of your day-to-day life for a period of time. Renovations and building work can be disruptive, especially with different trades coming in and out throughout the day, and that’s something we never take lightly. We work incredibly hard to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for the whole family — including the children. Keeping life feeling as normal and comfortable as we can while work is underway matters just as much to us as the final result.

Today was a perfect reminder of that.

I had the privilege of being asked to sit down and have a story about unicorns read to me by one very amazing and intelligent little girl, who had practically memorised the entire book word for word. After a coffee and a wonderful story time, I was proudly presented with a picture she had drawn for me — moments like that mean more than people realise.

Choosing your builder is not just about selecting someone who can do the work. It’s about choosing the people who are going to be around your family, your children, and your home every single day. We never forget how important that responsibility is, and we’re grateful for the trust our customers place in us.

Another strong step forward on this barn conversion project, where attention to detail has remained at the heart of everything we do. Our team has been fully committed to delivering quality craftsmanship throughout every stage, ensuring the character of the building is respected while bringing it up to the highest modern standards.

A huge credit goes to our roofing team, whose skill set, experience, and work ethic have been outstanding from start to near completion of the roof. From the precision of the timber work to the careful installation and finishing details, the roofers have shown real craftsmanship and professionalism on site every day. Their ability to work efficiently while maintaining such a high standard has played a major role in bringing this conversion to life.

I'm so proud of the progress being made and excited to share the next stages as this incredible transformation continues.
