Assynt Young Crofters would like to invite you to the annual Stoer Crofters Show on Stoer Green this July.

This is a family-fun charity event and a showcase of what Crofting in Assynt has to offer, please come along and support us and enjoy the day.

This year we are raising funds for RSABI, we have chosen this charity as we wanted to choose an organisation that is making an impact in Scottish Agriculture.

We are still looking for volunteers, so if you have any time to help us make this day a success it would be much appreciated.

We’ve got some ‘stuff’ happening here! We’ve got a few hens who have been on a rolling rota of broody, so we got some fertile eggs sent to us which the grumpiest broody is now sitting on. Fingers crossed in 21 days we’ll have some chicks running about 🤞🏼🐣
Then this morning we met Andy (Loch Ness Honey Company) to collect our new hive and bees. So far so good, they are out exploring and finding pollen which is a good start! They are fabulous creatures and I could sit and watch them for hours though for now we’ll just let them settle before we do anything else and hope that Andy’s advice has stuck in our heads 😉🐝🍯

Lovely chocolate (Moorit to be proper) sheep ☺️ I mentioned the natural ‘roo’ in a previous post, the first pic is what it looks like. The fleece comes away without any intervention from us to allow for the new growth. We could remove it gently by hand and may look at doing this for him next year. It looks untidy but it’s no bother for him.
It means we lose the fleece too as it’s deposited in the field but it’s one less to clip 😉
The 2nd pic is Jessie with Jarly (Jarlshof), the wee lamb who was teeny and a bit pathetic when born. Look at her now! We don’t have favourites, we don’t have favourites……

A fun morning with the beasties. The ewes and lambs have been at ours long enough, there’s no grass left. So, as we had to vaccinate the lambs here and the sheep we bought in that are up at the Croft, we just took them up to the Croft to join the others. A bit noisy and chaotic as they all said hello and had a jostle, soon settled and all seen grand and happy to have grass!
To add to the chaos, the two Lavenders are broody AGAIN so need jail. One is ok being cocked off the nest daily, she will go and get something to eat and drink. The other just heads straight back up the ramp to her rubber eggs 🙈 she gets jail first then! Someone has decided she doesn’t need to lay a proper egg today, a teeny tiny little blue thing is all she’s doing thank you very much 🤣🤣 Seriously considering getting some hatching eggs for these two, it’s a rolling rota of broody so might be easier to just let them 🤔😏

Lambs and a bucket, they learn fast! 🙈🤣
