Finer than fine……

Tenon Engineering works to some very small tolerance limits in our machining departments, especially within cylindrical grinding but this example of wiring onto one of our customers’ sub-assemblies demonstrates a similar level.

The very fine wire from the attached coil is not much larger than a human hair so it takes some great dexterity and skill to successfully attached the wire to the small PCB ready to solder the “big” wires that connect to the shielded data lead.
Just one of the skills contained within our specialist assembly section, building and calibrating rheological air bear assemblies.

It’s just one example of the specialist skills involved in building and calibrating rheological air bearing assemblies for our customers.

For our highly skilled team, precision at every scale is simply part of the job - and that’s just fine with us! 😊

Da Doo Run Run Run, Da Doo Run Run….

Paraphrasing the 1963 song from The Crystals leads us to celebrating the efforts that our Production Manager has set himself. The 2026 TCS London Marathon. Alex’s day job is ensuring that TENON Engineering sets a steady productive pace so that our customers receive their products on time and to the high standards required. A steady pace is what Alex has been training and practicing for many months, and no doubt there has been a statistical analysis along the way!

The song has a simple repetitive chorus but there is no simplicity in running the London marathon and there is a very serious cause that Alex is supporting, that of Leukaemia Care and he plans to raise money every mile completed. 🔧 Engineering Work Experience Opportunity 🔧

Are you studying A-levels and considering a future in engineering, manufacturing, or an engineering apprenticeship?

In July 2026 we’re offering a week’s work experience placement for students who want to gain real insight into what a career in engineering looks like beyond the classroom. This placement is designed to support students considering engineering degrees, higher apprenticeships, or technical routes.

During your placement, you’ll gain exposure to:
- How an engineering and manufacturing business operates day-to-day
- CNC machining, fabrication, and production processes
- Reading and understanding engineering drawings
- Health, safety, and quality in a professional workshop environment
- Build a component and deliver a short presentation to managers, explaining the build process and key learnings from the week

We’re looking for motivated students, particularly those studying Maths, Physics, Engineering, or Design & Technology, who are keen to learn and explore future career options.

The room below…..

Continuing on from our previous post about the vital role of the Flow Department at Tenon Engineering, this week we’re taking you behind the scenes with a quick walk-through of our underground stores. An incredibly important and key operational hub managed and optimised by our Flow Team.

From this location, the team supports all three of our factories here in Dorking, ensuring materials and components move efficiently and seamlessly across production.

From floor to ceiling, the space is meticulously organised with parts and sub-assemblies securely stored and easy to access. Sensitive electronic components and PCBs are housed in a dedicated dry, temperature-controlled section to maintain quality and reliability.

From the smallest screws to the various robust packaging, everything required to manufacture and ship globally for Wallace Instruments (our sister company) and our valued UK customers is right here - ready when needed. A place for everything and everything in its place but there is always space for more.

Fed by the flow.....

Napoleon is reported to have said, “C’est la soupe qui fait le soldat” - commonly paraphrased in English as “an army marches on its stomach.” Both Napoleon and Wellington understood that supply and logistics were fundamental to success.

In modern terms, Tenon Engineering’s Flow Department plays that same critical role and is very much an unsung hero. While the highly visible achievements of our CNC operations - from Mazak machines with robotics to sophisticated Studer grinders and world-class inspection and quality equipment - rightly attract attention, it is the Flow Department that ensures everything runs seamlessly behind the screens!

From material supply, tooling, data, scheduling, work packs and stock picking to countless other details, the team works tirelessly and without fanfare. To the point…..

A great example of collaboration between Tenon Engineering and our sister company, Wallace Instruments, involved the design of a bespoke solution for testing an extremely small medical O-ring. The customer needed support with quality checking the O-ring when conventional test tables were not suitable.

With an outer diameter of just 2.5 mm and an inner diameter of 1.5 mm, the O-ring required precise and delicate positioning. By enhancing an existing sample table with additional detailing, including a rotary table and accurate location positioning features, we were able to deliver a practical and reliable solution.

A small project with big impact, delivering high measurement confidence and meeting the customer’s quality assurance requirements.
