Concept for an eco home set within the woodland landscape near Dorking. Designed to sit quietly within its surroundings, the building uses natural materials and a simple form to minimise its impact on the site.

The proposed build incorporates a sedum roof to enhance biodiversity, FSC-certified timber cladding, an air source heat pump for low-carbon heating, and a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system to maintain efficient air circulation and indoor comfort.

Oak splice repair going into a historic timber frame.

A new section has been carefully shaped and introduced to tie the brace back into the wall plate, secured with a forged steel bracket.

Small pieces of joinery like this quietly keep old buildings doing their job for another few generations.

Building taken back to its core to allow the internal refurbishment to commence.

The timber frame is now fully exposed, giving a clear view of the primary structure before we begin repairs and reinstatement.

Next stage is structural repairs to the oak frame, improving breathability and preparing the space for its new layout, while retaining original features and components.

This is what happens when old buildings are patched with modern materials without thinking about how they were meant to work.

Hidden behind layers of cement that should never have been there in the first place.

The timber has been slowly rotting away with nowhere for moisture to escape.

This is what happens when old buildings are patched with modern materials without thinking about how they were meant to work.

Strip it back. Let it breathe. Reinstate using materials appropriate for the age of the building.

Deep drainage installation with trench boxes in place for support.

With excavation complete, the pipework is being laid to ensure proper water management on-site.

The trench boxes keep the working area safe while allowing for precise installation.

Backfilling will follow once everything is aligned and tested, keeping the project moving forward.

We had the pleasure of working on this beautifully designed self-supporting cantilevered staircase for Galliford Try.

Our role was to infill the stair treads, completing this striking architectural feature.

A great project to be part of.

A post away from UK construction and over to Mwandi, Zambia, where George has been returning since he was 13 to support Paula and her team at Homes for AIDS Orphans. These homes are built using a technique that is not just traditional but inherently sustainable.

With no access to cement, the community uses termite mound soilโ€”readily available, naturally durable, and completely biodegradable. Mixed with water, itโ€™s shaped into balls and packed into a timber framework, much like wattle and daub. Once set, the same material is smeared over the surface as a natural render, creating a breathable and resilient structure.

Itโ€™s a stark contrast to modern construction. When a mud hut reaches the end of its life, it simply washes away, returning to the earth with no waste, no landfill, and no embodied carbon locked in industrial materials. Compare that to the demolition and disposal of concrete and synthetic materials, and itโ€™s a reminder that true sustainability isnโ€™t always about new technology.
