Old buildings usually tell you what they want to become.
The skill is listening before trying to force a completely new idea onto them.
A barn might have incredible roof timbers worth celebrating. An old commercial building could have large openings that create wonderful natural light. A historic outbuilding may have stonework, proportions or details that would be impossible to reproduce convincingly today.
The challenge with a conversion is bringing in warmth, services, insulation and modern comforts without stripping away everything that made the building interesting in the first place.
We’ve worked on barns, garages, lofts, commercial buildings and some far more unusual structures. Every one comes with different structural, planning and conservation challenges.
That is also what makes them so rewarding.
A successful conversion doesn’t hide what the building used to be.
It gives it a new purpose while allowing the original character to remain part of the story.
What unused building would you love the chance to transform?
