If you have a hot water cylinder, the temperature it runs at is a balance between two genuine risks.

Too cool and you create conditions for legionella bacteria to multiply. The cylinder should reach 60 degrees at least once a day to deal with that.

Too hot at the tap and you risk scalding, particularly with young children or elderly relatives. The answer is not to turn the cylinder down, it is to fit blending valves at the outlets so the stored water stays hot while what comes out of the tap does not.

Combi boilers heat on demand and do not store water, so this does not apply to them in the same way.

Worth checking if you have never thought about it.

Loft conversions and garage offices have a common problem. They were added to a house whose heating system was never designed to reach them.

Often there is one radiator on a circuit that was already at its limit, so the room is cold in winter. In summer the same room, right under the roof, becomes unusable. People end up working in a coat in February and a fan in July.

Extending the wet heating system that far is sometimes possible and sometimes not worth it. An air conditioning unit handles both directions independently of the boiler, on its own controls, in one room.

If you work from a room like that, it is worth pricing both options properly.

Every winter someone blocks an airbrick to stop a draught, and it is one of the few DIY decisions that can actually kill you.

Gas appliances need air to burn safely. Starve them and combustion goes incomplete, which produces carbon monoxide. The vents in walls near boilers, fires and cookers are sized deliberately, and they are not optional insulation gaps somebody forgot about.

The same applies to cupboard doors with vents cut into them, and to furniture pushed tight against a vent.

If a draught is coming from a vent and it is making a room uncomfortable, the answer is to deal with it properly rather than to block it. Ask before you cover anything.

Every certificate we issue arrives digitally on the day of the visit, not in the post in a fortnight.

Gas safety records, service records, installation certificates. All of it lands in your inbox and is stored so it can be reissued if you lose it. Landlords can forward it to a tenant immediately, which matters given the 28 day rule.

It sounds like a detail. It is the difference between having your paperwork when a solicitor, a letting agent or a manufacturer asks for it, and hunting through a drawer.

Same job either way. One version just does not create a problem for you later.

If your existing system is full of sludge, we will insist on cleaning it before a new boiler goes on, and occasionally people think we are adding work.

We are not. A modern boiler has narrow waterways and a heat exchanger far more sensitive to debris than the old cast iron units. Fit a new one to a dirty system and the sludge that was quietly sitting in the radiators gets pulled straight into it.

It also voids the guarantee. Every manufacturer requires the system to be cleaned and treated, and they will ask for evidence if you claim.

So it is not an upsell, it is the difference between a boiler that lasts twelve years and one that fails in three.

Most combi boilers in Scotland are running their heating far hotter than they need to, and it costs money every day.

A condensing boiler only condenses, which is where the efficiency comes from, when the water coming back is cool enough. Set the flow temperature too high and it never gets into that mode. Drop the heating flow to around 55 degrees and most homes lose nothing in comfort while the boiler runs measurably more efficiently.

Two things to know. It is the heating dial, not the hot water one, so your showers are unaffected. And the house will warm up a little more slowly, so it suits leaving the heating on a low steady setting rather than short blasts.

Ask us to set it properly at your next service.

28/09/2026

Heat pumps come up constantly and the honest answer is that they suit some houses very well and others badly, and the difference is not subtle.

They produce heat at a much lower temperature than a gas boiler. That works beautifully in a well insulated house with large radiators or underfloor heating. It works poorly in a draughty older property with small radiators sized for 70 degree water, unless you upgrade those too.

So the real question is rarely the heat pump itself. It is whether the house is ready for one, and what it would cost to get it there.

Anyone who tells you it is a straight swap without surveying your radiators is not being straight with you. Worth an honest conversation before any money is spent.
