Fuel Poverty is when unfortunate people cannot afford either to cook or heat their homes. Due to circumstances, probably not in their making, they are not able to pay the high prices offered by the BIG 6 companies. Power generation is big business and even in this day of searching for Renewable energy, who are the winners and who are the loser’s??
It is no good saying that this wind farm or that solar farm produces enough energy to feed 1000 houses when the energy they produce is sold to the National Grid and re-sold on to the Big 6 and that the sale of the energy is going into the pockets of the big companies who constructed the site and their shareholders. Even if a company offer shares to the community it cannot be construed as a true community energy company as the only people who benefit are the ones who have substantial amounts of spare cash to buy the shares, as with the Wight Community Energy company who require a minimum investment of £500. In NO way does this help the large percentage of Fuel Poverty people.
A system that will benefit all the people within a community can only be achieved if it is controlled by either the Government or the local Council who have the resources to distribute the wealth to every resident. This can be achieved either by a large reduction in Council tax or opening a Council owned energy company themselves where residents can sign up to purchase their electricity from them.
I know you would all say that the local authority doesn’t have the money to invest in say an offshore tidal energy project, as could be achieved here on the Isle of Wight, but the Government does as it can spend £14B on a few miles of railway for London, bail out banks, help our steel industry, give away millions of pound to foreign aid but to mention a few. I never remember being consulted to use MY money in this way. A few million spent today could help a hundred thousand plus for ever and bring many more people out of Fuel Poverty.
